Phil Neville was someone who never played with less than 100% effort and determination, and although a limited technical player his versatility has at times been important.
His and
Moyes professionalism and dedication marked a sea change in Everton's professionalism, training and team spirit that was much needed after the Smith era. You hear from recently signed players that he was always taking them out or inviting them round his gaff, and a lot of his work at the club probably goes unnoticed.
He was never going to be a world beater, and has probably played 1 or 2 seasons too long. However I hope we remember the good in him, and that his abiding memories of Everton are not being booed against Wigan or him and his missus receiving abuse from blues on twitter.
As a side note, this is kind of an end of era thing. He's the last of the
Moyes "2nd Squad" that was put together with the Rooney money. Arteta 2 seasons ago, Cahill last season now Neville.
Also think this means Moyes is staying, otherwise why'd he be making the decision on whether Neville would be getting first team games next season? Surely they'd have left it up to a replacement to decide who to keep
