Am I right in thinking that the argument is as follows: If you chase a ball into the corners during a game rather than just waiting in the middle, you can no longer score the sitters that arrive throughout these games?
Pretty much. Simple isn't it.

Nope, he was forced out wide while Ba was playing the lone striking role, which is why he's scored less.
Jelavic also ends up playing wide, despite being a lone striker.
I suppose all those shouts of 'get in the box' from our fans are all delusional.
So Pardew has ruined him then?
As for Jelavic, you mean when he's laid a ball out wide & he's stood in Saha'esque position admiring his 10 yard pass, rather than bustng a gut to get into the box? You think Moyes coaches that?
FLHD, surely you've noticed jelavic has scored way more in his first season than his second, just like johnson, just like yakubu, just like beckford would have turned out. And please don't say it's because defenders have got use to them because yakubu, went to blackburn and did exactly the same as what he'd been doing throughout his career and was one of the league's top scorers. I was so pleased when we bought him, because he was great for us, a natural goalscorer, scored 20 in his 1st season. Obviously he got that bad injury, but i'm not sure whether it ruined him, because like i said he went to blackburn and started slotting again.
The problem with jelavic is his confidence is shot yes, but he's not really missing chances anymore, he's not even getting them because he's always stuck wide, providing the assist (to nobody). Ok, yes it worked away at newcastle for the 2nd goal because we had two strikers on the pitch, but more often than not, he's the only striker and has nobody to aim for/making a good enough run into the box - because that should be his job.

Stupid is what it is. Why would having to run a little into the flanks mean he keeps missing the sitters he has been?
Also worth noting nearly every time Pienaar, Fellaini, Osman and Baines work their way up that left side Jelvaic is stood in the box ready to kick the ball wide of the goal.
He's just having a bad patch, he's geting loads of chances, he'll start burying them soon enough.
He's getting loads of chances ? Can you name them ?
Crystal ball stuff that like........
If Jelavic is the furthest player forward & the ball is in the wide area, what do you want him to do, leave it? If he picks up the ball out wide then he's relying on others getting into a central area. It's a basic principle of the lone striker system.
The system & the personel are unaltered from last season, Jelavic is missing chances that last season were busting the net.
He has relatively simple chances nearly every game he plays, he just misses them.
we have attacking wing backs and wingers to deal with that. That's why they play that position. Obviously i'd want my striker to do a bit more than stand in the six yard box all the time, but i don't want to see him venture from the middle 3rd of the pitch. He cost £5.5m for a reason. He's not rooney, he can't do the job of a £30m striker, we can't afford that, so we play to his strengths because he's suppose to be our main goalscorer. Not our false winger/creative midfielder all in one
