Nikica Jelavic

I don't really understand the criticism of Jelavic. He's scored as many goals as Nolan, Berbatov, Long, Aguero, Bale, Lambert and Hernandez. Whilst Torres, Crouch, Odemwingie, Podolski, Giroud, Kone, Lukaku, Cazorla, Mata and Rooney have all scored fewer than him.

He might not be running all over the pitch closing players down like Straq used to but that's not his game. His longest dry spell has been 3 league games (QPR, Liverpool, Fulham) and his strike rate is better than 1 in 2. The reason that we ruin strikers is that we want them to be our first line of defence. Why try and change him? Let him do what he does best.

I don't think it's criticism to say he hasn't hit the heights of last season and maybe the team aren't playing to his strengths like they did then either. Maybe Fellaini is stealing some of his thunder. It is a worry when you see him in acres of space and fluffing that volley like he did against Reading for example. I am pretty sure he'll come good again and am glad that his "poor form" isn't particularly barren when it comes to goals. No harm pointing out he doesn't look at the same level currently.

Some Jelavic stat comparison via Luke O'Farrell (@LukeOFarrell) from twitter.

11/12 (12/13)
Mins per goal: 106 (201)
Mins per Shot: 31 (32)
Shooting Acc: 58% (35%)
Conversion Rate: 29% (16%)

So he seems to be getting a similar number of chances per game, however he's just not slotting quite like the boss he was.

Quite a leap. He's taking a similar number of shots, that's all that tells us.

Where those shots are from is another thing. A nice through ball leaving him in a one-on-one with the keeper and a shot from 40 yards behind a row of defenders are both still single shots. Only one is really a 'chance' though.

That is a good point, and shooting from further out or from a more difficult position, would in general lead to a lower shooting accuracy and therefore conversion rate. I've had a quick scan on google and can't find any stats for where his shots have been taken.

In terms of shots on and off target for the team this year, this is from the clubs website:

Mirallas has been had the most on target, Jelavic the most off target

does anyone know if this jelavic story is true? I had heard rumours of this a few days ago but didnt believe it, Kev certainly needs to pass it a bit more even ronaldo knows when to pick a pass rather than do it all on his own, hopefully felli moves back to CM and osman goes behind jelly I can see it being the best thing for our style of play to bring jela into the game more

Been dismissed by the Echo's Everton correspondent Greg O'Keeffe as nonsense, so i'd imagine its not true. Players argue all the time, I doubt that something like that would cause any major long term issues, if they even did have a row

Dismissed by O'Keefe? Hes about as reliable as Changy.

But im fairly sure theres nothing in that story, pretty sure its a Kopite story.

Everton would certainly not let him go for anything Arsenal would be willing to pay.

Hes going to score 3 tomorrow in a 3-1..... il wager
