This is complete speculation based on similar incidents, but my guess is that Hamlin will pull through in the end. It seems like the initial response is what makes the difference with cardiac arrest.

On the positive/ironic side, there are not many more likely places to survive cardiac arrest than a football field, with all the doctors and emergency medical equipment on standby and plenty of people who know what to look for and what to do.

Footage widely available on the internet shows crystal clear, from a variety of angles, that the point of contact was shoulder to chest. There was no helmet contact by either player.

You're right to ask the important question about helmets and their role in a contact sport. Equally important to note that the helmets were not a factor in Damar Hamlin's case.
