Refreshed from the cold air of storming off round the block to try and calm down I am going to try and find some positives, as they say.

At least Roberto did try to change the starting formation from 4-2-3-1.

Alcarez played well and Baines put in an incredible amount of hard work all match, albeit all rather everywhere and nowhere at times.

Kone should a good first touch and lots of movement.

The turning point in the whole match was Cisse's missed elbow.

Might things have been different with Howard fit and either of Jags / Stones fit to play instead of Distin, who in my mind was only playing by default.

However......

.....I thought Baines was lost. When you are in strange position it's easy to run aimlessly, that's what he did. What you should do is attach yourself to your opposite number until you get your bearings. He created Mirallas' goal and 2 chances when he found himself out wide. For me, he should've been told to play against the touch line, stretching the opposition and providing young Garbutt with support. I found it really odd what he was asked to do.

Still struggling to blame Martinez for today to be honest. Yes, he's been at fault for a few results this Season, but today? Nah not for me.

Was it Roberto who decided that the ball should bounce off Barkley for their third goal? Was it Roberto's fault that McGeady thought he could take on the world and end up giving it away for their second? Was it Roberto's fault that Cisse never got sent off when he should of, and scored the equaliser? Nah, he's not you know. He's also not at fault for Eto'o skying a shot over from about 6yds or at fault for certain players playing like absolute [Poor language removed].

What we seen tonight were the players not performing like they should, you can say 'Well Roberto played them', well he had no choice, did you see our bench? It was [Poor language removed] grim. You can blame him for other results, but for tonight? Nah, not a chance.

A few observations that I can recall:

1) Great pass by McGeady to Coleman to set up our first.

2) Great one timer by Kone.

3) Distin on their first chance right after our goal ??? Ball watching and lucky he/we weren't punished. Can't do that.

4) Cisse...should have been off for elbowing Coleman three times, the last in the head and never should have scored the goal. He'll get a three match ban for that crap.

5) McGeady. Awful awful give away that lead to their second goal.

6) Robles. Not really making a case is he?

7) Garbutt. Looked good.

Overall, still poor but not as bad as some of the other recent matches. TOO MANY MISTAKES. TOO MUCH OF A LACK OF CONCENTRATION. I'm not encouraged and don't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Today was on the players. Not on Roberto.

I agree, while he put into an incredible amount of effort, it was largely ineffective. When I saw the team sheet, I had assumed it was to be the customary 4-2-3-1 with Baines in front of Garbutt.

You know, i LITERALLY was typing 'would love to hear our fans just going bezerk right now, give the Newcastle players some extra nerves' when they scored their first goal. Just wasnt meant to be.

And what about Barkleys assist for the third.

After his terrific loan season with us, we all wanted Barry full time.
Eto'o is a class act but in a misfiring line-up at present.
And from what I've been told, their deals are not ridiculous by the standards of many in the Prem.

Agreed.

There's a lot of revisionist history going on with Evertonians where players are concerned.

People are geniunely wondering NOW whether Lukaku, after last season, was worth the 28M we paid for him. Guarantee you they were the first to be happy clapping his signing and saying we were moving on to bigger and better things.

The word I saw was "slump."

Slumps are hard to break out of once you get into them. It also causes the questioning of ideas you might not normally question. I didn't question our signings (any of our signings) in the summer and I don't question them now.

Other than Besic and McCarthy I don't think we have anyone else who would get in the refs or oppositions faces when we get, or to be more precise, don't get decisions like recently.....if I were Roberto I'd let them both off the leash and risk a few more yellows for dissent and bring a bit of snide into our approach. We definitely need some Tim Cahill grit at the minute.

Another Christmas spoiled by Everton -
