Only Everton create these scenarios where there are no possible players good enough in any positions we need.

In this millenium we’ve bought one first choice right back who’s been successful. Seamus Coleman who cost £60k. It’s 2026.

The only permanent specialist right back signings in that time that we paid a fee for aside from Coleman: Patterson, Lars Jacobsen.

Rest have been academy kids, loans, centre backs moved across, or midfielders like Neville.

Just an absolutely shameful dereliction and we’re supposed to believe that once again there’s not a single right back out there we can buy in January.

We had that period with Coleman on one side and Baines on the other and now it's strange to think we had that balance. Other clubs just always have it or strive to have it all the time.

Something weird about this club's aversion to attacking FBs.

We are amongst the least patient group of fans out there. Dibling is written off after a hand full of games, Aznou was until he came on and ran about and Röhl getting pelters. Garner was written off initially as was iroegbunam - we need to allow players, teams and the leadership the time to show what they can do - very rarely happens overnight
Exactly!

Least patient fans? We are 30 years without a sniff of a cup we sell out home and away we are far from the least patient.

Aznou was written off by Moyes. The fans had never seen him until the closing minutes of another humiliation at home…

Yes, but if a player doesn’t come in and perform like peak Messi they are written off and when we don’t fix everything in one window the owners / management are equally written off (by a vocal chunk)

We had that balance properly for one season in 13/14 when we truly shifted attacks down both flanks evenly. Prior to that we built up far too much of our play from the left back position which resulted in the right back becoming more tucked in and defensive. It’s understandable when you have Baines and Pienaar on one flank and Hibbert or Neville on the other but not when you have Mykolenko at left back.

I wasn’t a fan of the seasons under Martinez that followed but there’s a lot of lessons from 13/14 that we could be heeding now.

In terms of transfers though we’re surely the only PL club who have a handful of permanently specialist right back signings in a quarter of a century of PL football. Absolutely ridiculous.

Giving players time is fine but there needs to be some positive signs and we need to at least see that the fight and effort are there.

We have signed some really bad players over the last decade. Players that we could see were going to struggle at this level. I'm not sure anyone can argue that we've not made a number of recruitment errors.

So I'm not sure how fans writing off bad players means they are impatient. I think a lot of the fan opinion on players is accurate sometimes.

Younger players deserve more time than experienced players coming in, but this is top level football. You have to adapt pretty quick.

Another issue is us giving LBs away such as Antonee Robinson and selling on Digne.

There's a belief at this club that FBs aren't really specialists that you 'waste' money on. A CB can always do that job...

I suppose we got lucky with Tony Hibbert coming from the academy, which feels very weird to say. And I'd say that collectively, we probably only started appreciating the value of attacking fullbacks once Baines was a regular from 2009 onward. Following that you had one of the best fullback pairings in the league for a solid 4/5 years from 2012. So that's the context for the first 15 or so years when you say "this millennium".

Your point is still spot on though. The Patterson and Mykolenko double announcement is horrifying when you look back at it now. That was our chance to reset and we signed a pair of bums.

The last few managers have all felt that way, and I include Carlo in that. Post Moyes, it's probably only Silva that would be demand specialist fullbacks.

That's exactly the same at all clubs, going down to non league or even sunday league, you're just not in an echo chamber for the other clubs where you're consuming the opinions of their fans on a daily basis so you don't notice.
