if a graphics designer with a degree came up with the original monstrosity, i am all for going in the opposite direction and getting your average joe with no graphic background creating it; if the results are reversed we'll be introduced to the best badge ever

Not all Graphic Designers are bad. Look at the Olympic Logo. That it shocking too and yet a design firm were rewarded with 350k
I think understanding your clients/customers needs is key. I design Logo's and train young designers in my day job. It's always a struggle to try and please everyone when trying to redesign an already established identity. But the 2013/14 design is without doubt awful. I am amazed it went into production.

I would have drawn the old shield crest without the name or 1878 perfectly as I must have drawn it a million times growing up.

this is our badge , was always our badge and always will be our badge.
instantly recognizable , and even in a black silhouette every football fan would know its everton.
the dates and name added a few years back were not needed and the cause of all this 'it must be changed becouse elements are missed out' argument. having the need to have 'everton on it somewhere is like an adult man stitching his name into his pants imo.
if you dont know what club this badge belongs too without the need for the name being on it in big letters , imo you dont need to know , as its clearly not a club for the likes of you.
we dont need a consultation or to spend money on some no mark kopite graphic designer to come up with yet another badge that we still wont like.
and we wont like it becouse it still wont be our badge - this above is our badge.

If Man United have their name on their badge i'd say we need Everton on ours. Football is a global game and if we want the brand to grow the name needs to be on there, simple.

balderdash. im from the other side of the country and got hooked as a kid before i could even read the word 'everton' + theres thousands of fans from around the world too who all know the club and follow the club and know that badge without the need for the name on it.

Yeah, we have thousands of fans. Other teams have millions.

I made the point last night by using NFL teams as an example from the other side of the globe. The majority of us can probably name the teams by the logo on the helmets. None of these actually spell out the team name.

I believe it is a current trend though and we are falling into line with the rest of the premier league. The focus group where unanimous in believeing EFC Heritage is the most important aspect of the club. Founder member should be shouted loud and proud and is more significant than a few stars showing you won a later invented cash cow trophy. I would like the club to maybe tweak the tower and basically revert back to how the crest has been for the last 20 odd years. But it appears the word 'EVERTON' has to be on it.

Why though? There would be no material benefit whatsoever. Are you implying someone is going to see us play and say 'gee i love those guys but there's no way of finding out who they are, I'll support man u red devils instead'

Similarly do you honestly think that United having their name on their crest makes any difference to anything? Besides they've always had the name on their crest, they just removed the 'football club' bit about 20 years ago or so.

It looks sh1t. Simple as that.

other teams that have more fans have more becouse they win things and thus have more media coverage = more recognisable. not becouse they have there name on there badge.
if the club is not on tv in thailand for eg , why will a badge with our name make us more likely to get more thai fans than a badge without the name if nobody is watching us either way ?

just a few cases of point where icons speak as loud as words...

i know what all these are without the need for there actual names on there products.
i knew the everton badge was everton , i didnt need the name written on it to tell me who they were .

I highly doubt that, and certainly not the lesser known teams who desperately need more exposure...

There would be no benefit to having the name of your team on the badge which is shown whenever they play on television ? Fair enough, agree to disagree, i imagine marketing people would say it certainly does make a difference though.

You're comparing Nike, McDonalds, Adidas, and Ferrari to Everton. It's a stupid comparison.

On the other hand, a brand who are less well known internationally:

It'll be okay when we get the new tv money and spend billions of dollars on advertising like Nike etc though...
