Neville signs a year extension deal

Does anyone know the contract terms? Because if anything it would be reduced terms rather than increased. People moan like cheap whores when Hibbert plays and Coleman is firstly unexperienced in the position and secondly injured. Has Neville ever moaned playing out of position? Ever complained when subbed or not selected? Wouldn't it be helpful for Coleman's development to have an international defender to learn from?

Because that happens a lot....

Explain why he is a model professional please.

Come on mate, he is a model pro in every way.

He's just a player past his best, and one -- from a technical standpoint -- not good enough for us anymore. Not in the positions he plays in anyway.

That brings up a good point.

How many times have you seen a Balotelli or a Tevez here? How many Joey Bartons or Craig Bellamys?

The answer is not many if any. A lot of that is due to the personalities in the dressing room. We may have issues on the field but we rarely have issues off the field. A lot of that is down to the senior players in our squad, Neville being one of them.

Upon reflection, I think I'd want Nev to stick around for a few more seasons.

I just take issue with him being one of the first names on the team sheet. With our criminal lack of width Coleman should be starting at RB (when fit obviously) and Nev lacks the pace and passing range to play CM. He should really be a utility player at this point.

That way he's still here, and still an influence on the rest of the team and especially the younger players, but we'll also get to be less dependent on him and allow someone else to blossom as a captain. And crucially, other, more skilled players, would be able to play in his positions.

But unfortunatly what happens on the pitch is more important than what happens off it.

I don't mind Nev being around the squad, using his experience he is good for the young players and makes good cover. He won't be used like that though, he will more often than not play where his weaknesses are exploited.

He can be Mr nice guy all he wants off the pitch, good on him. But not when he distinctly average player on it. You need a combination of both, and when your negatives are oputweighing your positives soemthing needs to change.

Baines is our LB.
CB's are sewn up with Yobo and Heit to spare. (As well as Duffy trying to emerge from the youthies)
Coleman is being groomed for RB but is far from the finished article yet.
Fellaini is our supposed hard running DM player and defence defender. That said, when partnered with Arteta a couple of seasons ago, Nev did will with Mikel.
I hope he never plays as striker for us.

Exactly. We use his wisdom and gradually faze him out of the team and into the dugout. Glad we agree.

Not selected? Not if fit but he is the captain and until Coleman is ready remains the best right back option.

Subbing? Lots of times without complaint.

He isn't the best right back option though. Because the role of the modern day fullback is as much about attacking as it is defending. And when you have no width in midfield -- or in our case, a midfield comprised of all central players -- then you need width from your fullbacks. Neville provided us with width yesterday, by overlapping frequently, but once he got into those positions he was absolutely useless.

Defensively speaking Coleman is obviously worse than Nev, but factor in his pace and his youth, and then his offensive attributes, and we really have to 'roll the dice' and play him there.

As for him being subbed... it doesn't happen often mate. I'm not saying he'd complain if it did, because I agree he's a model pro, but that doesn't get us points or goals. And that's what we need now.

Trains hard, shows commitment on the pitch, displayed it on the international scene by always playing in whatever position selected and not moaning or retiring when not picked. Shows loyalty to his manager and teammates. To be honest mate whatever you think of him as a player I think his professionalism is beyond reproach.

How do you know he trains hard? Isn't that what he is supposed to do? As for commitment on the pitch? High pitch squeals in highlights and white boots is not someone I want my daughter or son to lookat as a role model.

He threw his toys out the pram over the spurs move and was silent over the whole thing until the window shut.

Why do people bang on about ' professionalism' it's an immeasurable concept.

We know he trains hard because his former manager and current manager, former and current teammates have said so. Are you really questioning his work ethic? He isn't like Sheringham playing til 40 and not getting out of a jog since 35, he still puts in the yards every game. You can't play in the prem without being an athlete these days, do you really think he doesn't train hard to play every week at his age?
If he wanted to move to Spurs he would have gone simple as that and if he did and had to stay then his attitude since has just been another example of his model professionalism, which may be immeasurable but not incomparable when set aside other players who deem themselves professional.

Those Mayans were friggin right......

I dont dislike Nev, but after yesterdays captains performance, I think he needs to take a long look in the mirror(and not at his highlights). Plenty of encouragement but lacking quality. 1st game though, so maybe I'm overreacting?

So, your saying cos people think he is great he is great? What about the people who don't (there are quite a few).

Not making a scapegoat of him at all, and with a wealth of youngns coming through someone with a mass of experience (albeit at utd) it can be good! but he offers NOTHING on the pitch, hasnt done for a while now! In the middle of our toughest financial, mental and even logical period this kind of news is not what evertonians want.

I want him phased out of the team but that's just a lie. Defensively he's still fantastic and offers a lot in that capacity.

The problem is he's completely useless at the half way line and beyond. It would be okay if he was a CB or something, but he plays in either CM or at RB.
