Personally i think Barry is a step up from Gibson. In terms of ability and usefulness.

That's no slight on Gibson who is a very good footballer and i'm absolutely delighted he is back this season and i believe he will be very effective if he stays fit. Been a great buy for 500k even for the injuries.

I agree. Gibson is good buy for the money and was a massive step up from having the likes of Neville and Heitenga starting in centre mid. Barry was a big step up from Gibson though IMHO. It's early days but it looks to me like Besic has more tools in his locker than any of our other centre mids. He's the quickest of all our centre mids, has great stamina and desire to win the ball but also looks like being the most dynamic in possession. Time will tell but I am really excited about seeing him. Could be the sort of midfield general we have needed since Reid retired.

Gibson was easily as influential as Barry. When Gibson was missing from the team the season before last it was very noticeable. Barry less so, but that may be negated by McCarthy's presence.

I think that says more about the quality of our midfield under Moyes than it does about the respective abilities of the players as you acknowledge. Gibson was important because the next options were dire. Nice that we now have genuine competition and people can disagree about who are best midfielders are.

Aye a fair point that.

Don't take this wrongly, I'm not challenging you, just interested but what you are basing his superior stamina on?

Thought I read that he covered the most distance on the pitch in every game he played. He will definitely get around the pitch better than Barry and Gibson. McCarthy is a freak so might have the edge on Besic in this area but Besic looks quicker to the naked eye. Though I read a stat saying he was one of the quickest players at the world cup.

Thanks, didn't know that.
I literally only know what I saw from my brief glimpses of the Porto game (looking after my 4 year old at the time)... Good to know.

Unbelievable coup, honestly can't believe there wasn't teams flocking around him.

Yeah, I'm really excited about seeing more of him. I think we've been a bit too nice in the past and let ourselves get bullied a bit by the likes of Gerrard and Suarez and others. I remember Gerrard sprinting for thirty yards in a derby when Jags was shepherding the ball out for a goal kick just so he could lunge in two footed on the ball and make a point and look like the big man. Don't think Besic will stand for any of that nonsense.

Christ mate, he's only played 45 minutes.

Its what Everton have to do. The likes of the Uniteds, Citys, Liverpools and Chelskis can afford to buy proven and known players whereas we are mainly dependant on buying potential and hope they prove successful. Still won't stop the likes of the loaded teams to sit back and wait for the likes of Besic to prove himself then just offer 3 or 4 times the amount we paid and with the help of the media it usually goes through or certainly unsettles the player. Unless we can qualify for the CL on a regular basis then all our players will be good pickings for the richer clubs and being realistic it is mainly the only way we survive

He's allowed to get excited about a player who seems to be really good from that 45 mins though mate. Personally i think it's premature but people are allowed to be excited and happy about that potential. Don't take away something that makes someone happy, yo!

I'm not. People can get excited all they want, and so am I, but I'm just saying it's a bit mad to be saying stuff like he's the 'midfield general we've needed' for 25 years.
