Moyes or The Board?

Don't get me wrong AF, I agree with you, being the first to break the top 4 and winning a cup with Wigan are possibly two of the biggest over acheivements of the PL, despite how meh some would have you believe it was. I couldn't say it without feeling a little bit blinkered though.

I don't think anyone is saying it wasn't an achievement; the disagreement is in how it was done.

First half of that season we were absolutely flying because our midfield with the likes of Gravesen, Cahill and Arteta were destroying teams. Gravesen left in January and we plummeted as Moyes couldn't re-adjust to his departure.

We plummeted because a small squad, playing a hard-running style, ran out of steam in the second half of the season.

Not really the impression I was getting from posts about how poor the league was, one in which Liverpool were too distracted to finish above us, or about it being the first negative goal difference to finish 4th, or that the manager was immiterial to the final position etc.
Doesn't seem much like saying it was an acheivement at all. Seems more like saying.. meh.

The following season's defeat against Villareal and subsequent capitulation against the mighty Dinamo Bucharest put a dampener on coming fourth for me, we hadn't even begun to really enjoy finishing there and the sh!te from across the park had put a dampener on it with the poxiest of CL wins.

When we were 1-1 away at Bucherest it was so obvious they were getting on top and we needed to bring Dunc on as an outlet, everyone realised this except Myes, I think that was the moment I woke up to his dithering

Moyes was excellent getting to 4th, there were only 4 clubs of any note back then (the sky4) and arguably Liverpool were distracted - but he still had to do it - and did.

Reckon the CL experience scarred Moyes, remember all the "I'm learning" stuff? Seems he learned to be cagey.

Compared to the fire of his early days he became overwhelmed by caution and was never the same, unfortunately it was allowed to go on far too long.

Finishing in the top 4 was, by several light years, the hardest thing any club outside the old Sky 4 could do at the time. Some average teams won trophies from time to time, but no one even came close to getting into the top 4. Still can't believe we did that, lower-than-usual points tally or not. Unreal achievement. Still hasn't been challenged by any club to date. The only clubs to have broken the sky 4 are Spurs and City and it's clear why that is.

I agree with, this what made that 4th place better was arguably that side was weaker than our 06/07-12/13 sides under moyes

that team showed that you do need skill and goal power to win things but hard work, organisation and a bit of self belief goes a long way. Will always have a soft spot for Marcus Bent... he put one hell of a shift in for the shirt.
