Moyes: I Expected More – News Archive – News – evertonfc.com – The Official Website of Everton Football Club
David Moyes says he expected more from Everton after seeing them let slip a one-goal lead to suffer only their second defeat in 19 games at relegation-threatened Portsmouth.
Leighton Baines' freekick - his first goal for the Club - gave the Blues the perfect start on a sunshine-baked south coast.
But it proved to be a miserable day for the Blues, Peter Crouch twice heading in from close range to give the hosts all the spoils.
Moyes felt the corner from which Portsmouth got their equaliser was wrongly awarded after Glen Johnson appeared to get the final touch.
"It wasn’t a corner kick," declared Moyes. "But there are no excuses for the way we defended it either.
"We should have done much better but we just didn’t get together the way we should have done."
Speaking about Baines goal, Moyes added: "He scored a good goal. We’ve been hoping he would score some. He scored a few when he was at Wigan. We’ve been working with him along with Steve Round and he got sight of goal and it worked."
The game at Fratton Park also saw a debut for Danish defender Lars Jacobsen.
The right back impressed his manager, who was relieved to see his summer acquisition finally make his bow.
"Lars did fine," said Moyes. "I’m pleased he got a game. I wanted to give the boy an opportunity and he got that today albeit in a difficult game."
