Overall it was pleasing to hear Moshiri’s comments, it was a good interview and quite stark in the contrast to the previous regime.
What is very clear from Moshiri as with many successful people is there is a real clarity in how he communicates. Very few words are wasted and there is not the euphoria and at times nonsense that predicated Kenwrights regime. He has identified what Everton needs to be successful and is trying to put those changes in place. Under Kenwright while many knew what the problems were he seemed to have no understanding of the difficulties and certainly no real plan for how to combat them. The plan he has is a good one and achievable. Get a new ground. Acquire sponsorship to help towards the costs and have a strong manager to have us competing.
It is clear that the club is changing with him at the helm. Maybe not at the speed people want and maybe without clearing off all of the old remnants of the past quickly enough. It’s clear he respects Kenwright and it will be an evolutionary process as opposed to one that happens immediately. I think we’d all hoped to see the day Elstone/Kenwright et al would be removed from the club in an unglorified manner which we won’t get, but hopefully we still get the same end result which ultimately is what we want; a competitive Everton.
There is an ownership to his decisions. He never ducked the question of Stones, nor did he hide from it, or nor did he try to pass the blame onto others. It was the answer of a man in control who will take responsibility for the good and the bad. This is a million miles away from a sobbing Bill Kenwright calling him Mum up when selling Rooney, or his silence/passive aggression when anyone mentioned Arteta and his sale. The world happened to Kenwright who passively stood by, whereas Moshiri controls what he can in his world. It’s the same end result but feels very different.
Everton will change. The fact he noted Koeman’s ruthlessness as a key trait is important. He said something like “a player performs or he drops him and then eventually will replace him”. There is no sentiment anymore. This will run through the business. Either you deliver for Everton or we find someone who can.
All of this is done in a calm and quiet manner. I like the fact he came out after a 5-0 defeat and didn’t hide and has the confidence to say it’s not good enough. After that defeat in Koeman’s mind some of those lads will be done for Everton. Moshiri will expect no more.
