I am well aware that there are some shysters in the force. Its important to acknowledge however Legs that its the same for every profession.

Its also important to acknowledge that without order you give bad people free reign to do what they please including those who may previously have worn a badge.

Thats the point that a lot of anarchists / defund the police groups fail to understand.

But every profession does not have access to guns or deal with rape victims.

On your first point, would you be happy for every citizen to have access to a gun if it meant doing away with the police as a whole ? Without the police we would ultimately need to be self policed and I dont see how feasible that is without everyone having access to some kind of "weapon".

No, I live in the US where already most citizens have access to a gun and think it pretty clear it isn’t going well!

But that doesn’t mean that the police here don’t frequently abuse their own powers with guns.

Yes it is very prevalent which is why it makes me hopping mad about the many reports of the police doing sod all about it and even enabling/being the predators themselves.

To be clear I don’t want to ”defund the police” but I do believe that, particularly in certain forces, standards need to drastically improve and there is accountability.

Racism, homophobia and sexism aren't acceptable, I've never once defended any Police Officer who did that or broke the law.

The Police service is far from perfect, like most public services in this country it has been ran into the ground and neglected while the Tory rats fill their pockets.

But I can't solely blame them, the problems do seem deeply rooted.

People seem to hold the Police up as virtuous people and expect a different kind of person, for me they are just humans doing a very tough job, who are prone to doing what humans do.

They have different kinds of powers, very different, this isn't postman pat we are talking about. There has to be a very serious procedure in place to review their behaviour. We can not allow such an institution to behave with impunity.

Look, again, to repeat myself, I thought the comments regarding a desire to see serving Police Officers die on duty was a bit rum.

Im not really here to defend the Police as such, there are major issues that certainly and unquestionably need addressing.

You have to appreciate that there is a sizable group out there that want rid of the police all together yet often these folk dont understand the reality of what issues that in itself would create.

Even in the spiritual community you'll encounter those with the viewpoint of society needing to be liberated from "oppression". Often you'll find many with that viewpoint are old skool Pagans or younger student types. Whilst I share their spiritual ideology, I couldn't disagree further with that opinion as we need a police force, we need obedience, we need structure because humans by nature can not be trusted with a nirvana of absolute freedom.

advocating people finally fight back against a regime that has murdered and lied and never been held to account for an awful lot of pain and misery.

I wish it wasn't this way, but the one way traffic of violence and abuse has to end, if that means a few more disgusting maniacs carrying the fight against state backed oppression, then so be it.

But surely you realise that is the worst course of action in every single way. For one, advocating for psychopaths to enact “justice” on the police force only leads one way. Pure anarchy. And secondly, it builds sympathy for the police force, it doesn’t make them think twice about how they deal with the public. If anything it makes it more likely for heavy handed/illegal tactics. There is no world in which saying we need more people like Moat or Cregan makes any sense. It also only makes the person perpetrating it as bad as the target.

Moat and Cregan weren’t some vigilantes trying to clean up our streets and save us from an incredibly flawed police system. They were psychopaths with their own axes to grind who themselves killed quite a few innocent members of public. Even if they had been benevolent vigilantes that is not the way to go about things.

I am with you that the police forces in this country need serious reform and I am not for a second siding with our resident lunatic (sorry, spiritualist) calling for them to be able to beat the living daylights out of people to put them in their place and learn a lesson.

We need to get to a place where the police and the communities they look after trust each other. Not sure how that happens though after years of budget cuts and also the stink around them in general. There are no easy answers. Maybe if there was more funding (as if) and more time to properly vet them then it would be a start. Something needs to happen and soon. But killing coppers is not the way.
