Energy prices are baffling me.

We are on LPG, basically an underground tank, topped up when it gets to 30% full via clever computers and a lorry.

Paid £270 a month up till March this year. In March, due to usage, that went down to £170 pm. Got a statement today, and phoned to ask them about it. They confirmed that they had lobbed £1200 back to me in July, cos of the balance, looked at usage and current balance, and cut it to £80 pm.

And lobbed another £150 back to me.

So the £1200 basically paid for the log burner, and am best part of £200 pm better off since March.

Well I needn't have worried about the mussels. They were really nice and plump and tasty and the Thai sauce was just as I wanted. Deliciously spicy.

Only downside was a couple of them had bit of grit still in them, and you wouldn't get that in a decent restaurant. But I'm sure they would be treated with a more sophisticated cleaning process than a bucket of water and fingers?. Plus mine were proper bottom dwellers, not rope mussels.

First time cooking mussels so quite chuffed with myself tbh.

I'm getting my head round mine now. Kept the direct debit at £250pm throughout summer and built up a credit balance of about £700. With the £400 I'm getting off the Govt over the next 6 months I'm probably Well in the black, even taking in the recent price increase. So mine has been reduced to £170pm. I'll still keep an eye on it though but reckon it will be OK.lets be honest, they never usually underestimate the monthly payments do they.

In the summer, Octopus wanted us to knock our mixed fuel bill up to £250+, so I told them to k'off as currently pay £130 a month. We're in the black on that too.

Obviously, the prices will go up over the next few months, but I don't see the point in giving the companies a significant amount of money to be in credit.

I'm putting an extra £50 a month away to cover the increase, there'll then be the government grant too. If I go into arrears, I'll just box it off with the money saved.

I'd rather earn a couple of quid off it through savings rather than letting them accrue interest on it. If it goes up by £80pm, that's over a 100% increase - nah.

Thats fair enough mate. I was paying the higher amount over the winter and just couldn't be arsed changing the payment over the summer. If I was getting a half decent interest rate on my savings I may have thought differently.

Go ahead then Fred, share the Thai sauce recipe mate.

Fully expecting to be rewarded with a photo of a Tesco Thai sauce jar ?

Blue Dragon actually mate. I prefer that to supermarkets own brands.

Mind you, I do add fresh chilli, garlic, fish sauce, fresh lime juice, palm sugar, kaffir lime leaves, fresh coriander and coconut milk so I don't feel quite a fraud ?

Good morning all on this autumnal day here in Hyvinkää .I hope all had a good night and wake to smaller fuel bills .The wife pays ours so I asked and our electric is 400€ permonth and we don't have gas ,there is no assistance here either so it seems 5200€ per annum ,it was 1300€ before .We have though got petrol prices down to pre Ukraine level .
I once picked mussels from a lake and when we cooked them they smelled very muddy so being a gent I asked the wife to taste the first and it was --muddy awful so they went in the bin .
Have a great day all .

Did you put vinegar or lemom juice in the water ?
No I didn't Blue. I've seen them do that on TV, and probably would have done if I had been cooking a traditional dish, but I thought it may have clashed with the Thai effect I was trying to create.

I also cooked the mussels separately on Michelle's advice. Because they are bottom dwellers a fair amount of sand and grit comes out whilst cooking, which you don't really want in the finished soup. So by cooking them first and draining, you can let the grit settle at the bottom and just ladel the good stuff from the top when putting your sauce together.
