Coleman was excellent, defensively very sound in the second half. Rodwell great as well (apart from one very sloppy pass). Ray Hall thought a lot of Beckford running off the ball (which couldn't be spotted on the TV coverage), Silva slowly got into it, Baxter as said above was running around a fair bit. Billy had a bit better time in the second half. Turner was confident and made some good saves.

Jagielka/Distin looked very good, especially Jagielka. Cahill was just doing a cameo walk-on part.

I only saw the second half but here's my thoughts on the game:

Saha - Excellent goal, improved hold up play and awareness, still needs to move a bit more for me, he’s too central at times.

Coleman and Anichebe - linking up well. Anichebe’s shown great composure and Coleman’s overlapping well, good footballer too. He’s comfortable cutting inside and running past players.

Joao Silva - worked hard, chased the game a bit. Barely involved on the ball. Shame really, but we did have Jutkiewicz and Baxter outwide when he came on, little creativity or passes into feet.

Jagielka and Distin - Solid.

Beckford - not a back to goal man but bright movement and some good pieces of play, promising.

Bilyaletdinov - still doesn’t look right, slow and sloppy in possession. If he was trying to be creative I wouldn’t be worried, but this is basic stuff, controlling the ball and 5 yard passing.

Rodwell - probably the stand out player, good goal, powerful running from midfield, intelligent passing and always available in possession.

Turner 6 - Didn't have much to do but made some nice saves when called into action. Comfortable catching too.
Hibbert 6 - Did well on the left. Dependable Hibbert performance really.
Neville 6 - Picked up were Tony left off. Looked pretty good going forward too!
Disitin 6 - Comfortable though largely untested.
Jagielka 8 - Immense. He just was just a brick wall for Melbourne.
Coleman 8 - Had a great game down the right both defensively and going forward. Great linkup with Vic. Crossed well for Jack's goal.
Bily 5 - Nice touches and runs from him but largely sloppy. Must improve.
Osman 6 - Quiet compared to the Sydney game, but was neat all the same.
Rodwell 9 - MOTD. The kid is just immense. His tackling, movement, and distribution was just so effortless. Never put a foot wrong all game. Well taken goal.
Cahill 6 - Largely quiet like Ossie, but assured enough. Along with Jack broke their play down quite well at times.
Gueye 6 - Good general holdup play and distribution and got into the box a couple of times. Looks a confident kid.
Anichebe 7 - Good stuff Victor, more of the same please. Linked up brilliant with Coleman on the right and played some great through balls on a couple of occassions.
Saha 6 - Quiet in the first half but improved in the second leading up to his great goal. Nice one Louis!
Baxter 6 - Some neat touches and good movement, has a good motor on him.
Beckford 6.5 - Came straight on and nearly scored a world-class goal. Good movement and engine and his eye for goal can't be questioned. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
Silva 5 - Barely got the ball, but looked handy amongst the Melbourne defenders. Early days for him yet.
Jukebox 5 - Collected the ball and looked to take defenders on, but wasn't on the pitch for long.
Mustafi 5 - Barely touched the ball, but was comfortable though almost totally untested at the back.

Did I forget anyone?

Sounds like a good game. Anyone have any idea if there will be any highlights later? Not on Everton TV. I mean, like, for free.

Bily is worrying me though. It doesn't sound like this much needed rest was the problem after all :S

Im not too worried about Bily personally. For his sloppiness during the game I was getting the impression that he wasn't really trying to get out of gear and was just trying too often to make the killer pass. He'll know not to take such risks in the Prem.

I'd agree, had I not seen him act like this in important games last season...

Great assured performance from the boys today!.....Rodwell was a class above just keeping the game flowing in central midfield just breaking Melbourne's attacks up and starting our own, Magaye Gueye is a confident young player who looks like he will play a part in the first team squad in the coming season, Victor Anichebe is definately suited to a right wing role where he is composed and powerful, Seamus Coleman looked like a top class attacking full-back and he was very solid defensively, Saha's goal was a class above as was Rodwell's on the volley with his left foot and the inter play with Anichebe and Coleman was top draw in the build up to it and finally, Beckford's movement and liveliness was very impressive when he came on, he also did a fantastic bit of skill where he flicked the ball on the turn and almost smashed a 30 yarder into the top bin.......enjoyable watch all round and it just confirms my belief that Everton are destined for a special season....COYB!

I actually thought he was great against Utd and Chelsea and was largely good in the Europa games he was involved in. He can produce moments of magic in games also, which is one of his best traits.

Maybe he wants to turn it on in the "bigger games" , but it;s the bread and butter matches we need the team and individuals to perform just as well. Could it be a motivation issue?

The problems I have with him are:

1.) Slow tracking back, or just doesn't.
2.) Tries to take on players, but fails to do so.
3.) Sometimes when the midfield is linking up, it's his wayward pass that ****s up a good move.

There's no doubt he's got an incredible eye for goal and awesome left foot, he's certainly got good vision too. The worrying thing is that even against poor opposition he's struggling. Against brutish PL teams he could be brushed aside.

I'm not worrying about anyones performance until they've had 4 preseason games. As that's how long it actually takes to get anywhere near match fit anyway.
