McCarthy heralded as future Captain

McCarthy is one year older and has played double the amount of top flight games Rodwell has, their game/natural talent may differ but it's nice to have a player you can rely on to play more than 2 games before collapsing in a heap on the floor clutching his groin.

He's a Gwladys St player, no doubt. We all love a player with his attitude and he'll ping in a couple of dirty challenges that will change our luck in a game or two this season, without question.

I think I'd rather rest him against Palace and have an Osman/Barry CM...which should be enough against that opposition anyway.

With his game and an inexperienced card happy ref we're asking for trouble playing McCarthy on Saturday. And we desperately need that CM area at full strength against Liverpool.

definitely agree, im not sure martinez will...oh hes gonna get booked isnt he?!

McCarthy sits on bench unless we need him to come on and control midfield- we shouldn't have that problem (here's hoping).
Play Barry and Heitinga. Or Osman. Or Barkley. Or Segundo Castillo.

Osman was utter pants in that role on Sunday. He should play deeper if anywhere.

So he plays several games deep and plays very badly. Then he plays a total of 90 minutes or so in Barkleys role, where most had been saying he should only be played, and plays very well against Villa but poor against Spurs and you think he should be played deep again?

He hurts us most this season by losing possession or being easily bypassed. Playing him deeper means he hurts the team more.

With Roy Keane looking like becoming O'Neil's Assistant for the Republic, I think it can only be a good thing for young Jamesy.

Think what you want of Keane's personality/attitude (and most people will) but he was as tough a competitor as they come, giving it everything as a destructive high energy midfielder who never really pretended to be (or wanted to be) the silkiest of footballers. Exactly the sort of player who can strengthen and teach James.

Trapattoni's only criticism of McCarthy was that he didn't impose himself on games as much as Trap thought he could, he thought that James was well capable of dominating an opposition midfield but was a bit too respectful at times and lacked a bit of arrogance that it was his ball. Clearly James is improving at this as we've seen this season but I can't imagine any one more suited to toughening him up than Keane.

Will only improve him as a leader, fighter and probably future Captain..

He must play against Liverpool so he need to be rested against Palace.

I'd go with that. Martinez has been wanting to rotate his midfield, so it would give an opportunity for Osman to play alongside Barry and for Barkley to resume his usual role. We beat Chelsea and West Ham with that set up, so we shouldn't necessarily be any weaker and it might help us with breaking Palace down.
