We are just reverting to the mean.

We've had so many years of outperforming our wage/transfer budget that people got used to it and decided it was the new normal.

The Moyes era saw us gain 10-15 points more than we should each season. The long term average for a team with our budget is about 50 points.

Even with that meagre target we've significantly under-performed this year.

So would I sack Martinez? No. There is no obvious outstanding target available to replace him. 70% of managers would be performing almost exactly the same as him in the long term with our squad, with 25% doing worse and the elite 5% doing better.

The inflated view you have of Moyes amazes me.

He had a settled side with a settled system and that immediately gives you an advantage that finances cant legislate for. Moyes was time rich. Put that into your number crunching and it wont show up, but it was a factor.

The way you speak of Martinez as some second prize after Moyes is hilarious: he wiped the floor with Moyes' PL record at Everton at the first time of asking and playing actual football on the ground that was far more in line with our tradition than Moyes' hoofball.

I find it amazing after he took the English champions and turned them into a laughing stock that Moyes still has currency with anyone. He's out in Spain now because he's been banished from English football - or, rather, he's banished himself out there for a couple of years to detoxify his brand and hide from the humiliation.

So why you can't take into account that Martinez could be the opposite? He brought an instant impact and did well in his first season, but he's struggling to build a consinstent contenders to a Top5 stop. That's a possibility if you look at his Premier League record. He showed some glimpses (like winning the cup and ours last season) but in a long term, he's just mediocre manager.

Hes only been at the club less than 2 years, in which the first season he gave us the best season in decades

Bit of patience is in order

Was he mediocre last season?

You're using short term assessments of a man who's achieved in the game at other clubs as well as putting in a blistering first season here.

He didn't exactly improve Wigan league positions, did he?

I'm not his biggest critic. I want him to improve and take us forward, but I didn't see enough to trust him. Looking at his career you could say he overachieved in one season with us and was mediocre at best during others. I know winning an FA Cup is a big achievement, but their road to the glory was very easy - besides Everton and City. And that's my point - he's great in some particular moments but he and his system are not exactly consistent.

I'm looking at his Wigan time as well, mate. You have to take it into consideration.

Patience is earned. Bin Howard off close season, keep Mirrallas, make Barry & Naismith squad players., one or two good buys, actually organise a pre season, and he'll be showing he's learnt from the mistakes.

No you dont, the job he had there was entirely different.

You could put some of the worlds greatest mangers into wigan and they'd all fail aswell

That's just guessing game. Paul Jewell took them to a 10th place finish and Steve Bruce finisshed 11th.

They had an entirely different set of circumstances to work under. Robertos job was purely damage limitations the way they we're have to slash budgets and what not

According to transfermarkt he spent more in 10/11 than Bruce in his season with them.

I think it's obvious that last season was the equivalent of Jelavic going on a crazy scoring run after first signing as he was unknown and a breath of fresh air, then turning crap when his real level shows through.

Tony Pulis or Alan Pardew have had the same effects at their new clubs.

Last season excited me

This season has dismayed me

My gut feel is give the man a real chance in getting us to a level were we are all happy

Saying that some people will never be happy as they think we should be top 4 and winning trophies every season, and if that doesn't happen RM will be a fraud......unbelievable
