this year was a result of many things coming together ( cliched perfect storm if you will) older players who were key contributors last season getting on ( howard distin barry), new EL challenge, injuries ( pretty much everyone has missed decent time- Stones missed 3 months), plus teams figuring out to sit back and make us break them down which we don't have the ability in the squad atm to do. Can't really pin it on any one thing.
You've not mentioned Martinez there though. Don't you think any of the responsibility lies with him?

We came off a heavy schedule in the EL and straight into a heavy Christmas/January schedule with two games a week (remember we had two cup games also against WHU).

It's utter nonsense to say that the schedule wasn't punishing for Everton this season.

As soon as we got a game per week extended run, look what happens.

You lost me at "utter nonsense" Dave.

Some of us see things differently from you....that doesn't make what we say "utter nonsense".

pretty sure I implied that with the last bit about teams knowing how to play against us. for martinez's system to work vs parked buses we need someone to unlock the defense which we dont have. he does share part of the blame as he stuck with it when it wasn't working but the point of my post was this season wasn't all on Martinez, or on Howard, Alcaraz, or anyone individual. Alot of things came together to make this season a disappointment

I ain't buying that, Finn.

We put the Europa League to bed in Wolfsburg at the end of November.

In the weeks prior to that we had been climbing the EPL table and progressing serenely in our EL group losing only one in seven league games, I think, and that very unluckily at OT where only a missed penno and a world class performance from De Gea denied us at least a point.

The nadir came in the months of December and January when the only EL game was a dead rubber home to Krasnadar when we fielded a second XI.

Now, given we did not have to compete in the CC 1 Cup first round due to EL involvement we effectively played only four extra fixtures in those early months of the season when the players were fresh.

Russia aside, there was no great travelling involved.

Northern Germany ain't that far and Lille involved less travel than an away game at Saints.

I think it is too easy to blame the EL for our poor season.

For me, injuries to key players and the much documented "individual errors" are what cost us.

Plus the too strict adherence to Philosophyball when the likes of Hull, Stoke and Baggies were able to come to Goodison in midwinter and leave with something.

Not the EL.

That's what I think anyway ;)

No matter how much you try to reason with it it's futile. It just happends. Or atleast procentages for that to happend are higher.

S*** hard to explain...well atleast @davek understands what I ment

He is the manager so blame has to lie with him, I think most people would say he has been stubborn and also made some poor decisions over teams fielded.
It does need noting RM was a gamble as he is young and untested at a big club, and because of this we need to understand he will make mistakes along the way. The positives are still there to be seen by all, and for me doesn't deserve some of the flack he gets. he will try to get it right, he will try to get us playing good football, he will have us playing against the top 4 without any fear. Along the way there will be failings and there will be mistakes, but at a club with the finances available we are not capable of fixing things by spending money at the drop of a hat.
I can cope with this and like with Moyes will give him time and my support....and patience

I dont think that's true.

I voted martinez out months back

Now, that wasn't due to results solely. It was his style of play, his clueless tactics, poor team selections. His refusal to change his tippy tappy rubbish at the back and deluded pressers and comments.

Credit where credits due. He HAS changed his style. It's obvious thru either the players stance or off his own back we have changed the way we play. Yes still passing based, but not pass at all costs! It's great to see and the performances has improved ten fold.

I just hope this season has learnt the man that philosophy should be a base to work from, not a set in stone way of football.

My fear is that he will push his philosophy and tactics again next season. My hope is he has learnt he has to be more flexible.

Jury still out till next season imo.

Eloquently summing up why I was in the out camp.

How we played against Utd? Waaaaaaaaaay different than during our terrible run, where the same tactics were trotted out week after week.

For people who are saying they're now in favour of Martinez because he "changed his tactics", he hasn't. We set up to be well organised let Man Utd dominate the ball and hit them on the counter with pace. We also saw that against Arsenal and Man Utd at home last season, Wolfsburg away this season, and two failed attempts of these tactics against Liverpool this season.

Again, I'm a Martinez advocate. But to change your vote from out to in based on Saturday's tactics is rather silly.

Yes, playing against teams who want to attack us was not and is not the problem this season.

It was when the Stokes, Hulls and Baggies came and parked the bus that we struggled.

He changed his approach though. When the penny finally dropped that we were only heading in one direction by faffing around at the back and leaving Lukaku isolated he decided to dig in defensively and grind out a few results. We had 3 defensive midfielders on many occasions during these games and tried to hit Lukaku with more direct balls. It was painful to watch at times but it worked and he deserves credit for that. The worst mistake would have been to dig his heels in and refuse to compromise but thankfully he didn't and it has borne results, culminating in our excellent performance against United.

That's all most of us were ever asking for. Not his head on a plate. It was sensible management and has most likely bought him another season.

I'm honestly not sure if he's right or wrong for us. No one can really tell without having a spare DeLorean on the the drive and some plutonium from the Libyans. But it's been sound for a few months being an utter tit and getting right behind him for the MARTINEZ OUT posse to get angry when he has halted the rot. Lids don't like being wrong on the internet, and the dissenters are the most angry on here.

Anyway, days like Sunday make me feel sound as we are going after the top teams in the division rather than the eleven years before that.

We've been served up some utter crap this year though. Big summer ahead for him and first half of season. Some names need shifting out and the right players need to be brought in on our measly budget.

I just want the arl Everton of last season back, and to believe they can stick around for a bit and even get better. More than that I want us to win something, but that's a joint responsibility of the manager and those owning the club.

20 years and counting, sadly.
