I like that he's stubbornly refusing to withdraw back to the dark ages this club was dragged into under Moyes. It shows character.

Not many want to go back to the worst excesses of the Moyes era and the last time I looked 69.9% don't want the Martinez version of the pass, pass, pass, ( think Itchy and Scratchy, but instead of fight it's pass)

There must be a 'Goldilocks option'... not too Moyes and not too Martinez.

I have supported Martinez on several occasions on here, but just a couple of things he has said recently I am starting to doubt him.

The defending was not the problem on Thursday, he is the only person on the planet who thinks that

English premier league is at fault because we play too many games, he said we were prepared for the demands of Europe at the start of the season.

He should not take us Evertonians for fools and tries to pull the wool over our eyes, if he does the fans will turn very quickly, like what is happening now.

If Alcaraz puts a blue shirt on again then he should go

Desperate talking from a desperate man that is all.

Also admitting the defence is a problem is also admitting he is the problem.

Strangely, Martinez current win percentage (44.17%), is better than any Everton manager since Howard Kendall, (54.1%), and going further back the next manager with a better win percentage is Harry Catterick, (46.5%). Only 4 Everton managers have a better win percentage than Martinez, and they all won League titles.

What does it all mean? Probably nothing.

That's an interesting stat, one I'd not seen before. It does however support my personal view that Martinez is the best man for the job and that the contrasts of this season with last are part of the process of change. His system is clearly different to that of his predecessor, who in turn had a different approach than Walter Smith. Changing the style of play, the ability within a squad to adapt to that new style and maintains a good win ratio isn't an easy task, especially with a hugely expectant fan base and a European program to contend with. It's a bit of a viscous circle....we want to do well in the league so we can test ourselves on the continent, but the demands of European schedules has an adverse effect on the league. The efforts of the so-called top clubs this season just mirrors our own but on a different scale. Chelsea, City, Utd and Arsenal plus those over the park were all overhauling ageing squads, bedding in new managers and systems and generally rebuilding their footballing approach whilst at the same time trying to continue to reach the latter stages of the Champions League. Even with vast sums invested they have all to a man failed miserably to compete with their foreign counterparts.

It's not just Everton, everyone has had a relatively poor season and the league in general has been poorer this year with all the re-establishing going on. To have a 45% win rate is actually quite positive! especially considering that the vast majority of lost or dropped points have come directly from basic individual errors as opposed to rank bad team performances. Of course, there's been a few of them, but is there anyone who hasn't had a few absolute [Poor language removed] days at work since August?

Our Board, for all their weaknesses, will in my mind think along these lines and Roberto Martinez will still have plenty of credit in his locker. We need to stick on board mand get right behind EVERTON between now and May and concentrate on hitting the new season raring to go.....a season in which we won't have any European distraction unfortunately ( or fortunately)?

Can you give a link to where he said defending wasn't the problem please mate....not read that anywhere.....find it strange if he's said that after Thursday nights comedic defending.

Martinez added: “Antolin had to deal with too many actions that we, as a team, didn’t stop well enough on Thursday night.

“I don’t think defensively he had a poor game, I think as a team we put our defence and keeper under immense pressure because our defensive performance as a team wasn’t up to standard.”

Okay, the first part I can cope with. The second part makes me wan't to put on a Liverpool shirt.

I can only think he doesn't want to crucify the lad publically. There's no way a football man would really believe that. Ronald McDonald would have coped better than Alcaraz, Jagielka and Howard.

Manager in not-stringing-up-his-own-player shocker.

It baffles me. I know, every manager defends his players to a certain extent. But, this is borderline delusion. He had a "Below par" game or he had a "average" game would have been a better choice of wording.

Don't disagree. I'm pro-Martinez....with the exception of his OTT media performances. I understand defending players, but totally circumnavigating unacceptable performance wears thin.
