Strangely, Martinez current win percentage (44.17%), is better than any Everton manager since Howard Kendall, (54.1%), and going further back the next manager with a better win percentage is Harry Catterick, (46.5%). Only 4 Everton managers have a better win percentage than Martinez, and they all won League titles.
What does it all mean? Probably nothing.
That's an interesting stat, one I'd not seen before. It does however support my personal view that Martinez is the best man for the job and that the contrasts of this season with last are part of the process of change. His system is clearly different to that of his predecessor, who in turn had a different approach than Walter Smith. Changing the style of play, the ability within a squad to adapt to that new style and maintains a good win ratio isn't an easy task, especially with a hugely expectant fan base and a European program to contend with. It's a bit of a viscous circle....we want to do well in the league so we can test ourselves on the continent, but the demands of European schedules has an adverse effect on the league. The efforts of the so-called top clubs this season just mirrors our own but on a different scale. Chelsea, City, Utd and Arsenal plus those over the park were all overhauling ageing squads, bedding in new managers and systems and generally rebuilding their footballing approach whilst at the same time trying to continue to reach the latter stages of the Champions League. Even with vast sums invested they have all to a man failed miserably to compete with their foreign counterparts.
It's not just Everton, everyone has had a relatively poor season and the league in general has been poorer this year with all the re-establishing going on. To have a 45% win rate is actually quite positive! especially considering that the vast majority of lost or dropped points have come directly from basic individual errors as opposed to rank bad team performances. Of course, there's been a few of them, but is there anyone who hasn't had a few absolute [Poor language removed] days at work since August?
Our Board, for all their weaknesses, will in my mind think along these lines and Roberto Martinez will still have plenty of credit in his locker. We need to stick on board mand get right behind EVERTON between now and May and concentrate on hitting the new season raring to go.....a season in which we won't have any European distraction unfortunately ( or fortunately)?
