Leave mccarthy and kone out of it as those are standard 'manager going back to old club to get his mates' style purchases, but lukaku, gerard, barkley and barry - yes barry - would all not look out of place in the CL.

You will say these are all loans, however thats the boards fault, not Bobby's.

Moyes would have had the same issue but wouild not have employed the same level of creativity to get the players in. We'd watch Osman and Jelavic for yet another season if Moyes was still here with Ross on loan to Blackpool!

Doubtless he knew a sht storm was on it's way re our best (as it will every summer) and had to ride it to see what was left.

Getting in a load of "potential" from all parts of the globe would have been a mad gamble in such circumstances.

I think he's played an absolute blinder, the job started proper sept 2nd he managed to bring stability via Barry and Mcarthy in the loss of felli and Vic and excitement with Delboy, Lokaku and, fingers crossed, Kone.

Well i'm Happy with them.

Joel - £2m from Atletico, i'm convinced had Atletico not got the best goalkeeper in the world (in my opinion, and it sickens me that we never took him at €6m when Chelsea did) in Courtois that he'd of been playing games there. He's a big lad, commands the area, and okay, he's young and still learning, but he's looking impressive for Wigan, and he's made Howard look like a brand new goalie, which is only a good thing.

Alcaraz - Everyone on hear bangs their drum about how Jagielka can go on til he's like 36, yet moans at Alcaraz being 31. Free Transfer, competition for Distin and Jags, and gives us more time to buy a CB to go with jagielka, with less pressure on Stones too.

McCarthy - He's gonna be a cracking player. He's two footed, got rave reviews from the media (Even if one is Shearer), he's only 22, and i'm excited to see him play.

Kone - I felt we could have spent the money better, but that said Jelavic Scored 7 prem goals last season, Kone scored 11 (Including two versus us), so theres clearly something there, but he's gonna have to show it quick, fans are impatient, and with Ramadan, and that shocker against Stevenage to back up excuses, he needs a goal, fast.

Barry - Do i need to say anything? England International, hungry for games, to prove a point, to sort himself out next year. Vast experience, can help teach McCarthy a few things, and vitally ease the load on Gibson. Cracking Signing.

Lukaku - What else needs to be said.... Shame it's only on loan.

Defoleu - Promising kid. Deserves more game time.

And the supposed '£15m left over' for January... well lets get ourselves a decent CB ay.

One thing that may not have been brought up is that possibly Martinez is purposely not making any big signings and may not in January (assuming he is even given money). I would not be surprised with RM knowing this season he is playing with house money. Unless we get relegated or look completely overmatched a lot of our results can be chalked up to players learning a new system which is completely different from one they have been playing (for even up to ten years). So during this time period RM can completely take stock in what we need and who can adjust to his system. Clearly he really wanted McCarthy but everyone else (I'll ignore Kone) will help the team but if they turn out to be a mistake or don't fit won't cost us a fortune or set us back. Other clubs can survive with making a 15 million pound mistake. That would cripple us. I have a feeling that unless we are pushing for europe our January buys would be younger players to develop in the system. Hopefully we can ship off some dead weight as well.
