Martínez is transforming Everton

I don't think there's any real difference between us this year and last year, but fair play to Martinez he's delivered a good points tally, far and above what I thought we'd have at this stage.

The job he's got is a difficult one, we all want him to do better than what Moyes did. Obviously there's opportunities to win trophies but in terms of league positions he's really up against it. The finances of the other top 6 clubs show no signs of abating, we're at the point where even squandering £6m on Kone looks bad when Arsenal spend £40m on Ozil.

Put it bluntly, if Martinez manages to get us into Europe whilst he's here then he's done a fantastic job. It's a pessimistic view of looking at things, but it's realistic.

There's a massive difference. If that game today with a team right behind the ball would have happened last season Moyes would have had them launching balls into the area to break them down all afternoon.

Well, this time last year we started to wonder if the wheels were starting to come off. We had a great start last season in terms of the football we were playing but you get the impression we started fast, then faded. Martinez started steady and we are slowly cranking it up (although we need to do better defensively). My point is that under Moyes we were as good as we were going to be but under Martinez you get the feeling we are only at 70%. That's the difference. Now, we have a difficult period coming up. If we take 7 from 12 over the next 4 games I think it will a very good outcome

Three clean sheets on the bounce. We've kept shut outs in 6 games out of 11 without being particularly defensive.

I think there are a few relatively minor things for Martinez to look at offensively.

a) I think he's trying to pace Barkley so that he doesn't burn out but, without him in the side, Lukaku is getting very little service and is dropping deeper looking for the ball.
b) I know that Mirallas is the league's joint-top assist provider but I think that he's too marginalised out on the wing. I'd rather see the Belgian in the hole and Osman on the right if Ross is being rested.
c) If we're going to keep Barkley in reserve why don't we try 4-4-2? With Lukaku drawing defenders it should open up more space for Jelavic.
d) Martinez seems to be against putting high balls into the box but Lukaku is strong in the air, as is Vellios. I think that we're limiting ourselves, especially with such a good crosser as Baines in the side, by ruling out playing the aerial ball.

Roberto isn't as rigid as Moyes in his thinking and I suspect that he will experiment more as the season goes on. Deulofeu is looking almost ready, so that's going to ask a big question for starters.

True, 3 clean sheets...but Palace should have had 3 today and Villa too. And Chelsea. We are not good defensively and each game we are pretty much giving 2 or 3 glorious opportunities. It's a trade off by attacking more, but today our defending was truly schoolboy not helped by the midfield giving the ball away every 2 seconds and Lukaku being isolated. Plenty to work on before the sh1te

I always thought that the problem with Martinez's Wigan were that they were too relaxed and they didn't start playing until the pressure was on. Maybe we need to get a bit more fired up before the game?

Certainly for the last couple of games we haven't been at the races in the first half. Liverpool do have a tendency to score their goals early, so it is definitely something to be aware of.

It's difficult to tell which parts of our play are legacies from Moyes that Martinez is trying to iron out and which things he's encouraging. We may be passing the ball better but we still lack movement, so we're not finding anyone in space with our passes.

Which would have been absolutely fine.

I kind of agree, we are not much different tom last year. We are two points better off. However, as has been noted, last year was a side Moyes had spent 11 years to build, whereas we are 3 months into Martinez's regime.
The side we are playing is also a fair bit younger. If we finish 2 points better than last season, given we have really spent any money (net) and it's Martinez's first season that would be excellent. Our league performance was the strongest part of the Moyes era, and it is being matched.
