Martínez is transforming Everton

Even the side that won the CL wasn't that great. Gerrard was arguably one of the best players in the world at that stage but, Alonso aside, they didn't have an awful lot more quality. The rest of the starting eleven that day was Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore, Luis Garcia, Riise, Kewell and Baros. They had Carson, Josemi, Biscan, Cisse, Smicer, Nunez and Hamann on the bench.

Our team back in 2005 was Martyn, Hibbert, Weir, Yobo, Watson, Kilbane, Carsley, Arteta, Cahill, Ferguson, Bent. Subs: Wright, Osman, Beattie, McFadden, Vaughan.

How many of our players would have got into their side? Maybe Martyn (Dudek), Arteta (Luis Garcia), Cahill (Kewell) and Ferguson (Baros). Our regular left back, Pistone, probably would have pushed Traore too. So it was pretty even really.

I think that they have had the self-belief and the tactical know-how to get one over than us more often than not and they're perceived as puritans, while we're thought of as 'dogs of war', so referees have possibly been over-protective towards them. Gerrard has dragged them through a lot of games too where we might otherwise have got a more positive result.

Alot of the time that's all it boils down to. At times they've just been better than us.

When we were champions they turned us over 2-1 in the 1971 fa cup semi final despite being 1-0 up, we've mostly shat our pants since. Even Kendal's glorious reign was tarnished losing the FA cup final to them.

Only big Joe really reversed the trend they undoubtedly had the better sides during his time but he recognised first and foremost derbies are street fights and frightened the life out of them - undefeated big Joe.

Very true. There's a whole lot of history before 1971 though.

They were second fiddle to Everton from about 1892 through to 1965 or so.

Labone never came out after half time and we just never got going. It felt like we thought 1 was enough although I spoke to colin harvey about it and he insisted that they did not try to sit on the lead but credited Rs with raising their game in the second half. The glorious half time chant of " shankly shankly
what's the score ." was well rammed down our throat. A bad moment to be an 12 yr old evertonian!! Had got knocked out of European cup Qf by Panathanikos the Wednesday before so probably a bit leaden legged too. A very bad week for EFc. Set the tone for the early 70s.

When was the lst time we had a penalty in a derby game?

I am wracking my brain and can't think of one.

Or was there a Ruddock handball at the Street End in the Danny Cadamateri derby?

Yes, I think we had a penno that day circa 1997.

But other than that I just cannot think of one.

Wait....did we get a penalty in a 2-2 draw at Anfield round about 1978 or 79?

2000 or 2001 at Goodison. David Unsworth.

Game finished 3-2 to the RS.

Whilst I'm not trying to suggest that was a world class team it wasn't, I think you could be looking at names on there and judging on there career's as a whole. Often you can have a player at the right time in the right team and it's the best part of there career. Marcus Bent being a prime example for us.

In that team the likes of risle, kewel, Garcia, Baros, even dudek, finnen and taroe played probably there best football of there careers. Along with the fact that carragher and hypia were very good center halfs and in Gerrard and Alonso there really were not many better CM partnerships out there.

Believe me I don't like giving praise to that lot but look at our team....it was no where near as good! Even our better players at that time arteta and Cahill would not of got in that team at that point in time. Apart from Nigel Martyn of course.

I wonder is he any good at giving players a boot when its needed - he seems like an excellent man manager that players want to play for - but the likes of Belg Kev often need a cross trainer in the back side - i wonder is this something within his philosphey - he always comes across so nice.

Big test coming up for him next weekend. It's not so much the result but how he approaches the games, the noises he makes before and after, his team selection and how he handles it all.

I'm confident a man who can take Wigan to an FA Cup win over the most expensive squad in football is a man who won't give a thought to brendans bulbs.

Proof is in the pudding though.

The Toffees boss wants his side to stick to their new ideals even against teams which are renowned for their own attacking football. And with games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal approaching on the horizon, the Catalan insists he will not send out a side tasked with containing the opposition regardless. He said: “For me it’s important that we can play eye to eye against the top four clubs. It’s not good enough to let them take the leading role and simply say we’re going to be solid and hard to beat, then we’ll take opportunities. We’re not like that. I want us to be ourselves in any situation against any team"
