.....I appreciate he can be enigmatic and frustrating but I was surprised at the decision to withdraw Deulofeu. When he's on the pitch we are a much more potent team and a 2nd goal was the critical requirement last night.
Still feeling down after that yesterday, just to think we were 1-3 up in the tie with 20 minutes to go then a terrible decision lets them back in it but then it's our response after what annoyed me, it was all square in the tie and there was no response from us, it was like we had accepted that we were going to go out noone took control and tried to get us back in front.
Positive's from that for me,Joel again, not to blame for anything with the goals,Mori superb,Barkley for an hour looked back to his best, and then errrrr I'm strugglinglol
Yep Eggs, our threat disappeared there and then......I appreciate he can be enigmatic and frustrating but I was surprised at the decision to withdraw Deulofeu. When he's on the pitch we are a much more potent team and a 2nd goal was the critical requirement last night.

He is great, but he does tire, doesn't he? He did work hard!
To play City over two legs and to compete with them and their squad is a great achievement.
Del comes off alot, doesn't seem like he can do 90 minutes.....I appreciate he can be enigmatic and frustrating but I was surprised at the decision to withdraw Deulofeu. When he's on the pitch we are a much more potent team and a 2nd goal was the critical requirement last night.
I've caught up with all the pges in this thread, and would offer the following.
1. Defending. Managers at EVERY level (and I've managed at Sunday League level) advise defenders to get tighter to attackers as the opposing team get close to the penalty area. We have seen time and time again this season Everton defenders being too distant from opponents, and so shots rain in, with the inevitable likelihood that a half block results in a deflection going in past a GK who otherwise has the shot covered. Also, the golden rule for wide defenders is to NOT let the opposition wide players get crossed into the box. We fail consistently on that point...
2. Officiating. Having also refereed at Sunday League level for a number of years, what has to be understood is that such incidents as their second goal is a split-second decision. On a flat surface like a football pitch it is impossible for a referee at any kind of reasonable distance away from the incident to say for sure the ball had gone fully over the touchline. Don't get me wrong, I hate Atkinson as much as any other Everton supporter, but you cannot lay the blame at his door in this particular instance. As for the assistant referee (lineman to us oldies), if you look at a still frame, you will see he was not in line with the touchline, but several yards from it. Also, the width of the posts, even if he was bang on the touchline, would militate against him having a 100% clear view. Sad to say, despite all the spleen vented in previous posts, the officials were on a hiding -to-nothing on this one.
3. Management of the team. Not good enough. Evidenced over the whole of this season. Notwithstanding the odd incident, too many things gave gone against the team for it to be bad luck, bad decisions, etc.. The Manager sets the tone, style, call it what you will. The Manager carries the can when it does not go right consistently. Unfortunately, time for Roberto to pick up the can and head for the door...
..I appreciate he might tire but he does have that real ability to create something. Kone came on and kept possession but I never felt he would make a positive difference. Like Stoke the night before, we needed a 2nd goal and came unstuck because we couldn't get one.
I'm not too sure about your assertion that we did well competing with City. I appreciate they are a top side but we can beat such teams, especially in cup competitions.
The way Everton just concede the centre of midfield every week is embarrassing. Barry recycles the ball well enough, but he has no presence whatsoever, and Cleverley is pretty much a nothing player. McCarthy will at least put himself about a bit, but his range of passing is atrocious
Mate we had two shots on target last night, the man is a loser, he is all spin.1. City are a good team with some fabulous players. They are going to create chances - they have scored 45 goals in 23 league games. And our regular right back was missing.
2. Everybody watching on TV could see that the referee had made a mistake! It was just the same at Chelsea. And yet the FA does nothing to help the referee. And errors do not even themselves out over a season.
3. It's fantastic that Everton can play against the might of Manchester City three times in a month and compete on terms with them. The performances have been great, but we need better results - and better decisions from referees too. I'm sure that Roberto can improve the results, even if the referees are beyond his control.
Can't agree about Barry, he has very good presence and has been one of the few good points about this season. He was outstanding in both the home leg and the away league game. I don't think Cleverley is a central ball winning midfield player at all, he's better further up or out wide, but think there was little option with Besic out and McCarthy clearly not match fit(thought he was very average when he came on).
Fact is we got done by the better team and the officials. We need someone to take the burden off Lukaku who hasn't been on it since his injury in the first leg.
Look we need to get behind them now, starting with Carlisle and them some very important league games. We can't afford to dwell on last night, it's gone.

We were also winning 3- 1, the man has no plan B.We were playing away at City, and defending a one goal lead.
They were able to bring on Navas and de Bruyne as substitutes. We had Coleman and McCarthy, neither of whom were match fit.
And yet they only won with a deflected shot and an error by the referee.
We desperately need a lucky mascot.
