Man mark Bale?

Why would you use the slowest player in the league to mark the quickest???

Like recruiting doormen off mumsnet!

He is one of our slowest defenders. Full of running but slow.

Mate, I honestly don't understand how you can't see it. I've seen him give players yards head starts and burn them off. He's stupidly fast. His feet move so quick he can't control them.

If he was a coyote the roadrunner would have brown bread years ago.

fight fire with fire. I am going to be pretty pissed if we see neville or jags at RB with coleman in midfield

Obviously this isn't pub football, but we've done the man marking thing in our local team in the past. Put one of our players on their play maker's shoulder for the entire 90 minutes, whether we have the ball or they do. Essentially our player rarely, if ever, touches the ball, but the idea is that neither does their best player. And if you get the right man for the job and they can put up with the boredom, it usually works, the opposition gets pissy with it, they start trying stuff that doesn't work, it unsettles them.

No idea if that'd work at the levels of the Premier League, but Bale really is a step above anything else in their team. Who could do it for us? Perhaps Heitinga if he could devote his concentration to it, hell even Anichebe, he doesn't need to tackle, just never give him an inch.

Slug him.

I mean, he only breezed past Ashley Cole from 5 or 10 yards behind him.

Cole still has nightmares about Seamus. Every time we played Chelsea, Coleman absolutely abused him, every time!

If we play 5 at the back against Spurs there midfield are gonna have a field day.

Im hoping Osman/Neville doesnt give silly free kicks away on the edge of the box.

Everybody is worried about what Bale is going to do. He can't do a thing if he hasn't got the ball. Close down, play a high tempo game, hunt in packs. We have done it against teams in the past, we've played a spoiling game and come out with three points. It's not pretty, but it can be effective. Spurs tend to play a high line, so I would move Mirallas up and use him as an out ball, he has the ability to get behind defences with pace, as proved at the weekend, it would give them something to think about while we break down play. We have pacey enough wingers to cause them problems and maybe pin back their wide players.

I'm not sure man-marking is the answer, we dont have anybody strong enough, or smart enough, certainly not one that we can sacrifice to deal with Bale and to let the others play around him. Spurs are a strong team, but Bale can't beat us on his own.

Gibson does a great job of marking the right space to prevent a lot of dangerous balls, so he must be used as normal, Coleman can make their left side worry, so must be used as normal, as with Baines and their right side. We can be a strong team, well organised and can play a closing game, moving any one of our players out of position, to float, is not the way to do it though, in my opinion.

Anyone else think we will stick to the same squad and use Heitinga to man mark him?

I'm not saying this will happen but i'd imagine Moyes would rather have Heitinga in front of a back 4 than change the team round a lot.

Bale has been winning games single-handedly for Spuds this season and ignore him at your peril. The little ugly smug git/good footballer, on his day can cause trouble and score goals against ANYBODY.

Spuds went on a run recently where they struggled against teams playing deep and on the counter. They recovered from that because they were able to score the first goal and teams have had to open up.

I wouldn't man mark Bale as such, but somebody has to have the role of tracking him once over the half way line. He makes runs inside and and out and so there has to be flexibility across the back four and midfield to keep shape. Can see Moyes playing 4-5-1 and Gibson watching Bale. Moyes will take a draw you know....

I dont think Moyes will keep to the same starting 11 as they even made Stoke look good at times.
