Man mark Bale?

Are people seriously advocating Phil Neville to man mark Gareth Bale in 2013 or are they being sarcastic?

Yeah they are. They seem to be under the impression that because we had basically 2 players at right back it means that Neville had Bale in his pocket.

He didn't, Neville and Coleman did what any 2 decent players would do when they double up on a player.

Which is what we need to do again, just make sure as muich as possible we get 2 players on Bale as quick as possible. Which rules out grandad Neville. Not gonna be easy but we're superb at working hard so we can do it.

In fairness, Neville done a bloody good job last season marking him. Spurs have more than Bale though, so if we have one man stuck on him it will free up the rest of the field. I'm happy leaving Seamus (If Bale plays wing) to keep him quiet. He is one of the only players in our team who could keep up with him.

Looking forward to this one. Will probably be a tight game but i think we get the three points.
I think we got our 'stinker' out of the way vs Fulham & the win over Swansea will have instilled some confidence. We dont lose two straight at home very often although the Thursday night game vs Basel could have a bearing.

He is one of our slowest defenders. Full of running but slow.

Coleman is easily top 3 fastest on our team (along with mirallas and baines), it's actually been a point of concern for me. I've worried he's not developing good fundamentals defensively because every time he makes a mistake he just uses his pace to recover.

Back on the topic at hand, we need to focus on where we force Bale to play, rather than who's going to cover him. They'll most likely line up a 4-4-1-1, with lennon and syg on the wings, parker and dembele in the middle, and Bale floating around just behind adebayor (this is a huge guess, who knows how the FC Basel games will affect personal decisions?).

I think for that reason our full-back attacking is going to be crucial. using our central midfielders as outlets for our fullbacks and wide midfielders, we need to create overloads on the flanks to force Bale to come out wide and drop back defensively. This will make him less dangerous on the break, as I don't see him getting wrong side of Baines / Coleman, and if he cuts inside our centre backs will be in a good position to close him down (BTW, Heitinga can NOT play in this game. Did well in the last 2 games, but it would be a complete nightmare to watch him try to stay goal-side of Bale)

So no, I don't think we need to assign a player to mark Bale. When we played them earlier this season, Dempsey played the free-floating role that I expect Bale to play, but he was forced to drop back on the wing most of the game because Coleman kept finding space out wide. It nullified his attacking threat in many ways, and I think we have enough quality in our fullbacks to do the same with Bale. Gibson will be very crucial in this game, he'll have to do his normal double-duty on the right since we refuse to play with a right midfielder, but he'll also be responsible for cutting off service to Bale whenever Bale comes through the middle.

Of course, I'm just some moron on a laptop who isn't being paid 10s of thousands of pounds per week to come up with a lineup, it'll be interesting to see how Moyes approaches it.

Everton start every game with two centre midfielders sitting in front of the back four - there doesn't need to be any defence-minded changes. They haven't been a team that thrives on soaking up pressure since the days of Weir and Stubbs.

The most important thing for me is that Neville doesn't play. His big performance against Bale was years ago, and there's no way Moyes could justify picking him after Wigan.
