Two choices though dave:

1. We get a top quality striker but in the full knowledge that we're being used to develop his talent.

2. We don't get a top quality striker but we're not used as a developmental club.

There is a third option:

3. We get a top quality striker and he works his socks off...full stop, no agenda against his parent club, just lets the football do his talking.

Say he was an everton player , do you honestly think wed be able to keep him after hed banged 20 in , we cant keep hold of talent like that, enjoy the kid while we have him, dont think he will make it at chelsea while lemon gob is the manager thou

Exactly, that's why it's so important to have players that have an attachment to the club so it's more of a wrench for them to leave. Still very tough to keep them with all the money flying around but at least you have a chance. Anyone else is always a short term measure.

Totally happy with option one if it gets us into the Champions League

yeah i dont expect him for any longer than 1 season. if we actually do buy him, we'll only have him for about 2 seasons before we have an offer that can't be turned down. even if mourinho does want rid at the end of the season, he'll get much better offers than us.

It's nice he wants us to finish higher than Chelsea, but the tone of these pieces is beginning to grate a bit. We are being portrayed as some form of purgatory Lukaku has to go through to prove his worth elsewhere.

At least we know where we stand now and that is a good thing. At least he got a point to prove and we can use this to our advantage.

I know, and I'm delighted he's here. I wasn't having a go at him particulary, more the line of questioning from the media that pits us as some backwater club that's unworthy. In reality, and when you look at it cooly, he's played nearly all his football for Anderlecht and West Brom, and we represent a massive step up for him in terms of the players he has around him who he'll benefit from.

That, mate, is a very, very good point. Not for one minute think we will keep him, but I had never thought of it from that angle.

He won trophies with anderlecht*at a young age, won champions league at chelsea (on paper) and then has a season of game time at west brom before being shunted out of chelsea on loan to us.

Obviously he'd love to be the starting forward with chelsea but they arent going to be able to shift torres and if they sign a big name then he's 3rd choice. He has to make noises about staying at chelsea but I personally feel that if we made champions league he will:

A-- Be seen by the other top european sides as having helped getting us there (lots of exposure). Most likely be sold my mourinho.

B-- Join us.

C-- Go for another season on loan (look at courtois)

Would love him to stay. However, I was desperate for Rooney, Lescott, Arteta, Lineker, Steven, Stevens, Keown, Kendall MK1 etc to stay. Enjoy it whilst it lasts, because next season we'll all still be Everton fans, regardless of who is playing for us/managing us.

Thing is though mate, Lukaku wouldn't be a top quality player if he didn't have that thirst to prove himself a top player, capable to play at the very highest level.

It's a Catch 22. Everton are no longer an "elite" European club, but we want to attract elite European players.

Personally, I'd rather we had Lukaku than not, but I DO understand where you're coming from and I hate seeing us belittled, whether intentionally or not. However, I see the likes of this deal as a stepping stone, where we have to deal with the short term pain in terms of our reputation for the long term gain.

No point in taking issue with Lukaku for seeing us as a stepping stone, whilst our knobhound owners just sit there putting FA into the club

It's true, there's no reason why with proper investment that we would have difficulties hanging on to our top players, and attracting the very best like City, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelski do.

Indeed the very fact we have papered over the cracks with loans etc is due to it being the only way to compete. Unacceptable for a club of our stature, but we are where we are.
