So you would be happy if the only strengthening we did for a season, maybe two, was on Lukaku?.....
I would. If we had 30m somehow (which seems ludicrous to even suggest even for the purpose of a hypothetical -- although I am aware of the maths which some would use to get us to that figure) I'd be totally happy with that being the only transfer spending.
Then maybe we get Barry on a free for a year or two contract and otherwise try to promote youth (maybe rustle up some Coleman level cash for a prospect).
It's the one position where the budget approach seems to be much more difficult. You might get lucky but chances are you'll be left with a bunch of interchangeable 10 goal a year strikers who just do enough but can't take you to the next level. A talent like Lukaku (and I'm aware he hasn't played long for us but combine this start with a strong year last year and it's a decent sample) can win you trophies.
Basically we'd need the following:
1) Martinez and the locker room pull a Jedi mind trick and convince him to put in a transfer request.
2) We have CL football to offer.
3) Mirallas is still here.
4) We have 30m pounds.
... so ... feels like we shouldn't get our hopes up on this one because that all seems insanely unlikely to happen.
