The way you feel defending McGeady is probably akin to how many other posters feel when defending defending Naismith from you lol.

Agree with you, though. McGeady's a decent palyer to have. He was unlucky not to score and did okay tonight, despite being a bit wasteful with his final ball.
I can see that but it's wrong. I like and will defend skill players to the hilt. I wouldn't do that with Naismith because a) he was absolute tosh for 18 months, and b ) he isn't my cup of tea style wise and I think he's not a player you put in acm if you want a balanced team effort.

There's no inconsistency in my argument.

That's a decent away performance in a European game, looked solid at the back and Howard had no problems, maybe should have used/exploited McGeady more, but we took it to them better when Eto'o had a partner and could drop off and receive the ball while still having a presence up front.

No injuries is obviously a bonus and another game for Barkley means job done.

McGeady is a player with a lot of flair but not so much creativity, I like him and would probably start him ahead of Pienaar and Atsu but if all our players were fit I wouldn't have him in the starting XI

They were a good side, we didn't play great. Wasn't the most exciting game I've watched but we was without a few of our sharpest and fastest players. It was a fair result and I'm happy for us to of come out of that game with a point. We should also be happy with another clean sheet under our belt with the defense being out most problematic area this season, they looked solid tonight.

18 months, really? So he was gash up until last December/January?

The thing is, we looked like a side who are used to playing tricky away games in Europe. As @davek said, Lille are no mugs. Regulars in Europe, at home, more than a decent team.

Sure, some of our passing, well, final ball, seemed a bit meh at times, (Martinez has said the pitch was lousy), but that is how European matches away are.

And Eto is superb in these games. Still to be convinced that he is not as important as Martinez is for them.
First 15/20 minutes aside, we were very much dictating the pace of that game.

A very creditable performance. I think most see that to be fair.

Not everyone agrees with your view on this. I don't for one.

Lille were definitely there for the taking although judging from the starting line up I think Everton might have got exactly what they set out to do.

...only 1 English victory in Lille, clearly a difficult place to go. We might've won on another day but be under no illusion that was a hard fought point.
mr statman how many english teams have beaten wolfsburg away from home in europe my dear

That was a very handy and experienced euro team. We just controlled the bulk of that game and they didn't have a clear cut chance. We created one and their GK made a fine save.

That's about the long and short of it. A very well earned and professional point from a focused performance.

You know, Dave, I would almost say a performance like that was better than a gung-ho attacking display where we were unlucky not to take all the points.

It shows the team is growing into the competition....learning to stifle the opposition....focusing on the task at hand.

Should serve us well not just in the remainder of this competition for as long as we stay in it but in the seasons to come when we hope this type of fixture becomes part of the staple diet for EFC.

are we quibbling about a few months? The point is that he was the natural successor to Claus Thomson until he found some form. Anyone denying it would have a red face if they were vaulted on it.
