Well now they can put up a proper memorial in its place to the tens of thousands of slaves that he helped transport and the tens of thousands that died on the way. Surely a much better way to teach about the slave trade

I am not 100%, but I think they have already done that.

A minority of religious followers are fanatics- do you excuse them committing acts of violence because "they may have a point?"

Anyone who accepts violence is part of the problem and only seeks to cause further division not end it.
Definitely wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve at some point suggested Muslims should condemn terrorist attacks

Simple question - will all this increase or decrease race relations in the UK?

if the answer is decrease then great thanks for causing even more mindless violence at an already uneasy time ffs.
I suspect things will go back to where they were.

Minorities will still be at a disadvantage, but as they seek greater parity, there will be groups of white people fearful and angry about it who will meet it with violence, some will ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist and others will treat it with indifference.

Wow!! Let’s condone these bellends going round any city they like defacing and destroying statues and monuments!! And some here are ok with that!

There will never be a bigger divide in race because of all this because it’s being done all wrong. Expect race crime to go through the roof in the coming months, this is going to get really ugly indeed.

I think there is a big difference between being OK with it and understanding it.

Why would race crime go through the roof? It's not just black people protesting is it?

Race crime may be recorded more....

This nation was already incredibly ugly.

Shouldn't you be out smashing innocent peoples property or attacking animals?

Thought thats the in thing in protesting for equality these days or something.

OK but what shall we do about the statues of Lord Nelson? What if we find out there is a highly likely chance Francis Drake murdered a dozen black people, King George had slaves, Wellington was a notorious racist and as for Eric Clapton's blue plaque...

Where are we drawing the line here?

But it's not glorifying their legacy - it's simply an acknowledgement of the stature they had in their own era.

It's not glorifying them now. It's simply a monument to their time and how they were perceived then.

It's like this:

The point of something like this isn't to glorify "war" itself, it's to simply acknowledge it happened. Tearing it down because "wars are bad" would be monumentally stupid.

Statues are basically mini-museums. It allows people to look at them, see a name plate and then if they want do independent research and learn from why it's there. It does nothing else.

For Edward Colston, it'd lead a lot of people here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Colston - where it says clearly he exploited slaves.
I doubt that statues as “mini-museums“ are particularly effective - if you spent a day asking people who passed by one who had done that independent research to learn about the person how many do you think would respond yes?

And because, as you put it in a previous post, they “celebrate someone in the context of their own era” they provide a very limited representation of their era.

People dont like thugs doing thuggish things.

Thats why it will decrease thanks to the minority which you are cheerleading.

Going to have to try better there. For a start, nowhere have I cheerleaded them.

Secondly, my point was that these demos - especially the London ones - have been overwhelmingly peaceful. I live near the US Embassy, I've seen the demonstrators march past my balcony each weekend, walked among them as I go the local shop, queued up with many of them in said shop. The only instance of even slight badness I've seen with my own eyes was ironically just now when a (white) kid tried to blag his way into our block until he was told to go elsewhere, and he did.

Yet because some people kicked off in Whitehall - something that happens on a semi-regular basis (including at least twice with the EDL last year) - people are banging the THUGS drum again, pretending that a couple of hundred fools acting for a couple of hours represent anything and therefore "the cause is being damaged" - which to me is a fairly clear indicator that the person who holds that view is just looking for an excuse to ignore what people were marching about in the first place.
