Wow!! Let’s condone these bellends going round any city they like defacing and destroying statues and monuments!! And some here are ok with that!

There will never be a bigger divide in race because of all this because it’s being done all wrong. Expect race crime to go through the roof in the coming months, this is going to get really ugly indeed.
Sadly I think you might be right. I just hope a second wave of corona doesn't happen as the NHS may not be able to handle the strain. I think we can all agree that no matter your politics we are all human and nobody wants to see mindless violence in any form.

But it's not glorifying their legacy - it's simply an acknowledgement of the stature they had in their own era.

It's not glorifying them now. It's simply a monument to their time and how they were perceived then.

It's like this:

The point of something like this isn't to glorify "war" itself, it's to simply acknowledge it happened. Tearing it down because "wars are bad" would be monumentally stupid.

Statues are basically mini-museums. It allows people to look at them, see a name plate and then if they want do independent research and learn from why it's there. It does nothing else.

For Edward Colston, it'd lead a lot of people here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Colston - where it says clearly he exploited slaves.
Not the same thing at all.

Simple question - will all this increase or decrease race relations in the UK?

if the answer is decrease then great thanks for causing even more mindless violence at an already uneasy time ffs.

If people listen, things will get better.

If people like you instead just repeat the memes provided to you by the people who are responsible for keeping you and the people protesting down, then they'll get worse.

You are specifically focusing on a small minority of the protestors while ignoring any points about the validity of what they are protesting. You’re drawing equivalencies with the EDL and Black Lives Matter and I do not find that amusing or appropriate in any way, all you’ve done is damaged my hopes of a better, more equal future in reminding me that people with your mindset still exist en masse. Same goes for the people who have been liking all of your clever little alt right posts.

A minority of religious followers are fanatics- do you excuse them committing acts of violence because "they may have a point?"

Anyone who accepts violence is part of the problem and only seeks to cause further division not end it.

Not London but it’s an indication that perhaps some of the “protesters” are nothing but attention seeking idiots:

A statue memorialising a war is completely different to a statue of a person. The statue you have posted is akin to these which I imagine everyone supports and would be appalled if they were defaced or destroyed...

People dont like thugs doing thuggish things.

Thats why it will decrease thanks to the minority which you are cheerleading.

I have no issue with the protests but the only thing it will achieve doing it like this is blood and death on each race. They are calling it a protest when in reality is rioting.

So, could the same be said for the Emperors? Demolish the Colosseum? People like William the Conqueror? The list could go on and on.

Personally, there's a stark difference between the celebration of slavery and the acknowledgement of history that includes monuments with legacy.
They can be used for educational purposes to warn the people of today of the dangers these types of people pose and any common themes we should watch out for.

Also, I think there is a big difference in demolishing the Colosseum and removing statues celebrating slave traders.

Why would anyone get wound up about a statue of a slave trader being taken down?

If you're a council tax payer in the Bristol area I think it's going to sting a bit. Saw on the news once that a paved area cost 150k to replace, this is going to be more than that.

To stop the celebration of the person, I think you are getting confused.

There are no celebrations occurring yearly at the foot of the statue. Most people see the ying and the yang to it all.

So for all that damage done, what changes? We really told that person who lived 300 years ago, I'll bet he'll think twice before getting into the slave trade now....
