'daddy, who is this statue of?'

'a slave trader son, he was massive back in the day. Killed about 19,000'

'cool, so that's a good thing then?'

'no, it's bad but they made a statue which stands above you to show you it's bad'

'ok'

Wow!! Let’s condone these bellends going round any city they like defacing and destroying statues and monuments!! And some here are ok with that!

There will never be a bigger divide in race because of all this because it’s being done all wrong. Expect race crime to go through the roof in the coming months, this is going to get really ugly indeed.

so you oppose the damaging of statues ? You don’t agree with it ? Just a query then why did you middle finger me for me saying I wouldn’t be happy if the Churchill statue got attacked ?

You’re comparing the EDL to BLM here. You do realise how ridiculous that is?

No im comparing EDL thugs to the thugs posing as BLM.

Same way Islamic terrorists are not representative of Islam - if you cant see that then you're the problem.

Simple question - will all this increase or decrease race relations in the UK?

if the answer is decrease then great thanks for causing even more mindless violence at an already uneasy time ffs.

It will do nothing one way or the other.

Pubs and Maccies will be open fully soon. Everyone forgets about stuff then.

But it's not glorifying their legacy - it's simply an acknowledgement of the stature they had in their own era.

It's not glorifying them now. It's simply a monument to their time and how they were perceived then.

It's like this:

The point of something like this isn't to glorify "war" itself, it's to simply acknowledge it happened. Tearing it down because "wars are bad" would be monumentally stupid.

Statues are basically mini-museums. It allows people to look at them, see a name plate and then if they want do independent research and learn from why it's there. It does nothing else.

For Edward Colston, it'd lead a lot of people here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Colston - where it says clearly he exploited slaves.

It's not always easy to look back from our 21st century context and judge the lives and actions of historical figures. You cant totally ignore the context of the period they lived in, when looking back.

I saw graffiti got put on the statue of Abraham Lincoln yesterday and i dont get it myself.

All we can do is apologise and learn from past mistakes and make sure we do a whole lot better ourselves than those who fell short in the past.

If you're a council tax payer in the Bristol area I think it's going to sting a bit. Saw on the news once that a paved area cost 150k to replace, this is going to be more than that.

There are no celebrations occurring yearly at the foot of the statue. Most people see the ying and the yang to it all.

So for all that damage done, what changes? We really told that person who lived 300 years ago, I'll bet he'll think twice before getting into the slave trade now....
Well now they can put up a proper memorial in its place to the tens of thousands of slaves that he helped transport and the tens of thousands that died on the way. Surely a much better way to teach about the slave trade

Yes I oppose sorry mate I misread and thought you said you would be happy! Haha except my apologies.

*waits for middle finger :)

Wait till he shows his lad the Wills Memorial Tower, and then explain how many his trading contributed to dying.

At least Bristol has a spare plinth slap bang centre of town. I can think of a pretty fitting replacement statue........

A minority of religious followers are fanatics- do you excuse them committing acts of violence because "they may have a point?"

Anyone who accepts violence is part of the problem and only seeks to cause further division not end it.
How can you try and conflate acts of mass murder committed by some who follow a misguided ideology hidden behind the skirts of a religion, with people protesting against racial prejudice?

That’s one of the most idiotic pieces of whataboutery I’ve read in beards.

I hope so mate but I fear the minority of trouble causers will light a fuse of the far right thugs to "fight back" then before you know it we have race riots at an already uneasy time where the emergency services are already stretched.

Mindless idiots hope they aint clapping for the NHS after this.
