For me, rapists can be reformed - loads of factors into risk factors for that crime. Same with murders that were not necessarily premeditated.
Child murderers, serial killers, pedophiles though, nah I don't think there's a chance of it. Sentencing is ridiculously lenient.
I'm not as hardline as you are on this but I agree the scales have tipped too far the other way as they currently stand and sentences for certain things need to be much more severe. Not because they'd be a deterrent, but because the people who commit them will probably do it again when out. If you look at the people given whole life tariffs, for example, a lot of them are people who committed a murder and were released.
Will probably do it again when out? That’s not borne out by statistics though
