Current Affairs London Protests

I've lived in London for 8 years and though I have had jokes like at my expense, it has been a quite rare occurrence.

I suppose this is why we shouldn’t really put too much importance on the term “Lived experience”. The trump card that young activists seem to be using these days.

Everyone has a different experience no matter who you are. And everyone has a different point of view of what that experience actually was for them.

Do you think you have a better idea of what it’s like to be a scouser than someone who grew up in Surrey?

Er yes. That’s the point.

I wouldnt say so - if there was proof that loads of BAME managers were putting in applications for jobs of all levels of management in football and getting turned down because of race then I would be in agreement with you mate - but ultimately it seems to just be Sol Campbell moaning why he hasnt been given a top level job despite having no experience.

Ironically the one person I thought was arguably a victim of discrimination was Marco Silva when he got the Watford job - remember Merson and the soccer saturday panel hammer him on tv for getting the job as in their words he was just a foreign coach with no PL experience compared to your dinosaurs like Alladyce, Moyes and Pardew.

The fact Silva was white Portuguese for me was what let them get away with them comments scott free - had Silva been black or mixed race I imagine they would have come into alot more trouble for the sort of comments they were making just because he was a foreign coach.

My point was one of representation. Not about sol Campbell specifically.

Well this is embarrassing for you. Here is the statement from the Met Police:

A total of 36 people were arrested during protests on Sunday, 7 June for offences including violent disorder, criminal damage and assaulting police.

A large number of people joined demonstrations that were largely peaceful and left central London after the event.

However, a number remained in the area around Whitehall and behaved antisocially before becoming violent towards officers.

Police used a variety of tactics including containment to tackle several violent and antisocial groups before dispersing the final protesters at around 02:00hrs on Monday, 8 June.

All it takes is 1 person to light a fuse.

Given that I live just up the road from a scrap yard and see the odd things that get brought in, yes. I fully believe that someone, somewhere has put two and two together and realised there’s a load of bronze or brass floating round for whoever can grab it first, because no one’s exactly going to want their statue back.

I mean in all fairness if you got the statue back out, it would probably have a potentially enormous collectable value as well to some nutcase fascist who'd want to stick it in his garden. You might even be able to sell it off to a Museum for a fair few quid, or even to an artists/gallery. People would pay to see it. I'm not sure what that says about our society really, but hard to escape from that.

The issue with Sol Campbell and John Barnes is that they are actually crap football managers. Nowt to do with being black at all.

I never said it was otherwise. I did say that saying, 'here's one black manager, so it proves race isn't an issue in football management' is ridiculous

I have been giving the change of streets some thought, and I have decided its a daft idea. Reason is, when roads are built, they are usually named along the lines of a common theme.

The streets around that statue in Bristol are, I reckon, named after members of Bristol Merchant Ventures. Colston Avenue, Augustines Parade, Trenchard Street, Frogmore Street, and Baldwin Street.

They then lead into Princes Street, Queens Square, Kings Street. Get the idea?

Keep the statue in a museum or docks, arsed either way, rename the Colston Hall, (being done anyrate), but leave the streets as is.

Oh, Liam Rosenior was on earlier, (local lad), and said he educated himself on slavery and stuff, then added "there is still a street in Bristol called Black Boy Hill". There is, but is named after a pub, which is named after King James 1st.
