Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

My point is over what perception is peddled publicly.

It was Moyes who said we want to sign him. "if he's interested, we will be" It was Moyes who continued to talk down our chances with ref to black ball option.

And we're now seeing headlines from some of the biggest news drivers of Everton's pitch as a feeder club.

Ideally we keep schtum, and if he signs, great. We then control the narrative. If not, we're not left looking like soft arses with any other signing 2nd best.

Find it very bizarre Moyes has been so public on it. To whose advantage is that?

It certainly is.

As a club, I think we'd benefit from him not doing that - particularly this summer.
But then he'd put himself under pressure and he hates doing that. It's one of the reasons why he hasn't made it at the top level.

Indeed.

He gets less than 10 in his first season here he'll get booed
Considering both our strikers got a combined 11 goals in the league this season. A 10 goal season from delap
Don't really like the headlines for Everton on this.

Proactively admitting we want him, and then publicly admitting we're at a disavantage/blackball, an now ref to how the club have positioned themselves as happy just for short term stepping stone.

If he signs, it's a patronising head pat to a feeder club.

If he doesn't, it's a collective shrug from black ball FC and anyone who comes in afterwards, was never the priority.

Everton, at BMD, new owners, a club that's getting back on it's feet and building with statement signing to build for the future should be the narrative - even if it is Ipswich Town's England U21 striker.

Unless you’re Barca or Madrid, everyone is a stepping stone club. If he comes and is good, Utd buy him from us for 100mil in 2/3 years so be it

Other than as you say, managing expectations - I don't see any benefit to talking Everton down publicly. Becoming Everton's number 9 should never be spoke about as the black ball option.

After the last few years, when we've managed expectation largely out of necessity - given the turnover of recruitment this summer, new owners and a new stadium - now is the best chance we'll have to really kick ourselves up the arse.

As Moyes said not long ago, there's been too many to keen to talk us down, lets talk us up. Can he keep that going when expectation increases?
But we are behind the black ball with Delap. What purpose does it serve for him to come out and say we're in pole position?

If we now get him, he can say its a coup and a sign were on the up. If we dont he can say we were playing catch up anyway.

The big massive stadium we've just built would be a good start. State of the art and best in the country. The atmosphere and passion of the fans would be another.

After that it's probably going to have to take a (hopefully short term) rebrand of us being a good stepping stone to 'bigger' things like we did with Lukaku and Stones. Like Brighton but as a bigger club where we can say we will get you into the window of the elite teams.

Players aren't going to care about players who were good when their great great grandads were alive when other clubs have had Drogba, Rooney, Shearer, Aguero whilst they were growing up. We need to be pitching that we can get them to that level or at least they will become a cult hero like Richarlison who we turned into Brazils number 9.

It's a pretty tough sell but Moshiri was partly right in that we don't want to become a museum, we need to be looking forwards.

Your team having a good stadium is a nice to have rather than a must have. Cant imagine the stadium makes up anymore than 5% of a players decision

Indeed, and Man Utd, Chelsea and Newcastle aren't at the top of the stepping stones.

You could also say if he fails at any of them 3, black ball FC will come an sign you.

You don't have to say anything. Like with 99% of transfers David Moyes has made.

And if you do, you don't have to proactively talk us down as an option.

Moyes always knew his place. That's why Kenwright loved him. It's going to take more than a few months to change 11 years of plucky mindset.

That's not quite right is it, I read that from Moyes as it is Evertons position to being able to acquire Delap as being blackballed by an other club/s.

Perhaps we have crossed wires?

Just sounds like part of the dance to me. Think we're the only club to have gone after him so publically and wax lyrical about him, and Moyes talking down our chances because he's SUCH a good player is a part of the wooing.

Moyes hasn't just started discussing this one specific transfer for no reason. Its letting them know we're very keen.

He’s come through City’s academy and is highly regarded which is a good starting point considering the players who have come through there recently.

On top of that, he has scored decent goals in the PL in a team that was getting hammered most weeks.

At his current level, he is performing like DCL ever did and like a Mateta is at Palace. That is our level as it stands but the thing we can’t tell is what his level could be.
