Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

All contracts come with a possibility of moving somewhere else in the future when they are fixed term and only 3 or 4 years in duration.

Pragmatic reality is one thing, narrative/perceptive is another. Let's not position ourselves as a Brighton, Bournemouth or Brentford.

Publicly, let's at least pretend we have belief/ambition - otherwise we can't expect others to believe it.

Perception can switch quickly, and a strong summer of recruitment under new owners with BMD as a backdrop can quickly catapult us back to relevance.

I genuinely believe we're comfortably the best option for Delap - we don't need to talk ourselves down, cap in hand.
I don't mind what's been said, to be honest. I think it reflects reality, and I think it's useful for the fanbase to mix a decent scoop of realism into the hope and excitement of the summer.

It's a journey from perennial relegation candidates to challengers. As much as we'd like to skip a few steps, it's hard to pretend the reality of our recent seasons isn't visible to all prospective transfers.

For what it's worth, I think you're right that we're Delap's best option - and if he doesn't see it that way then it's not the right fit.

I don't know who his agent is, but some agents do actually look after the careers of their clients rather than just chasing a %. If it's Kia Joorabchian you can, of course, forget that as he only looks out for 1 person!
His agent is the same as Jordan Pickfords. CAA Stellar Agency.

Other than as you say, managing expectations - I don't see any benefit to talking Everton down publicly. Becoming Everton's number 9 should never be spoke about as the black ball option.

After the last few years, when we've managed expectation largely out of necessity - given the turnover of recruitment this summer, new owners and a new stadium - now is the best chance we'll have to really kick ourselves up the arse.

As Moyes said not long ago, there's been too many to keen to talk us down, lets talk us up. Can he keep that going when expectation increases?

- Sign lad, we're going places.
- Er, I know you have better options. But sign for us, and you can sign for a better club in 2 years.
At the moment I think this is the game we have to play and is our best shot at getting players in. Offer them the opportunity to showcase their talents in the best league in the world, and indicate that we won't stand in their way if a CL club comes calling.

Young players today weren't alive in the 80's. Personally think we need to humble ourselves a bit to get back to where we rightly belong. We aren't a tinpot club like Brighton or Bournemouth but we could learn from what they've been doing. Difference between us and them is that we're a proper club, and if we managed to get European footy we would be able to hold on to our players imo.

That's a Moyes character trait though, isn't it? To downplay expectations and hope to exceed them.

I'm guessing the black ball thing was more him than any particular club-level media strategy. As much as anything because Moyes doesn't strike me as the kind of guy to worry too much about that.

I can't deny the gloomy pragmatism didn't irritate me first time round - so I guess ask me if I'm as forgiving of it after a middling season...

I don't like the public positioning of our interest in Delap, either. Particularly so when I don't believe he is all that to start with.

The club can privately live with its position in the food chain whilst doing it's best to change that reality and certainly to change perception.

We have enough people and media dismissing us without doing it to ouselves too.

Aston Villa have gone from The Championship to Champions League quarter-finalists in a matter of years. Let's look to examples like that rather than putting ourselves down at every opportunity.

We must embrace opportunity, not fear it. That is a lesson for the entirety of the club.

My point is over what perception is peddled publicly.

It was Moyes who said we want to sign him. "if he's interested, we will be" It was Moyes who continued to talk down our chances with ref to black ball option.

And we're now seeing headlines from some of the biggest news drivers of Everton's pitch as a feeder club.

Ideally we keep schtum, and if he signs, great. We then control the narrative. If not, we're not left looking like soft arses with any other signing 2nd best.

Find it very bizarre Moyes has been so public on it. To whose advantage is that?

It certainly is.

As a club, I think we'd benefit from him not doing that - particularly this summer.
