Let the counter-briefing begin

A thread dedicated to our utterly hopeless, woefully predictable PR and Comms department at Everton.

Today (1 June) Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid. The club have clearly been caught on the hop by this, it's panic stations, DEFCON 1, and there will be the usual effort to save face.

There's never anything particular innovative or agile about the media team, so expect them to dust down the old playbook this week. This will include:

  • Friendly journalists throwing digs at Ancelotti. He'll be portrayed as duplicitous, mercenary, and an enemy of the fans.
  • Lots (and lots) of these friendly faces will be on the TV, radio and national press in the next few days. Expect to hear a lot about our home record.
  • Obviously there will be a stadium update in the next fortnight.
  • Lots of names will be tested to see how they "land". I am deeply suspicious of the Graham Potter chat emerging from low-count sources.
  • "Fan" led content - those who have had a kickabout on the Goodison turf in an offseason pre-COVID in a literal and figurative sense - will be getting well stuck into Ancelotti.
Let's use this thread to keep a track on this creaky machine in motion. Already tonight - and no links as it's the ECHO - Dave Prentice, who has been at the teet of the club for many a moon, has published an article titled "Carlo Ancelotti has turned his back on Everton but Toffees cruelly denied chance to stop him" with the sub-heading "Carlo Ancelotti has left Everton for Real Madrid - turning his back on genuine affection from the club's supporters". Clumsy stuff, but who cares? It's right on message.

What you won't hear:

  • Considered journalist asks "When Zidane resigned, didn't Brands et al. give this some thought as a possible outcome?"
  • Friendly journalist ponders "Surely Everton have a list of managers they'd have gone down if Ancelotti had said no 18 months ago? The #2 must be the favourite, as that suggests a strategy"
  • Local journalist questions "how have Coleman, Gylfi, Davies, DCL, Keane, Holgate all outlasted yet another Everton manager? Maybe this spine (lol) of the squad is the problem?"
The Blue Room lads ahead of the curve on the "Ancelotti was the problem, this is all OK." narrative.

Their post-ancelotti podcast.

No doom and gloom looking for all the positives in us being jibbed off. Wanting to get behind Brands pick as manager and develop a club identity beyond one manager.

Ah, just checked, the one-we-aren't-to-mention is behind it.

Another big tick in the box.

Actually to be honest that Prentice article is a disgrace and highlights the revisionism already at work

They veered away from a recruitment policy which had previously been based on attracting young players with potential and sell-on value, to allow Ancelotti to sign older established players like Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez.

Rooney, Gylfi, Bolasie, Tosun, Walcott - what's that, £120m? Old, no potential, no sell on value. That's absolutely never been the "policy".
This is the club pushed narrative.

Ancelotti wanted his own players and they weren't in the long term interests of the club.

Now we will get Brands and a manager on the same page...

Repeat ad nauseum.

Can I be involved in the Graham Potter messaging please?

Dave Prentice in the Mirror:

There's your mercenary shout. Worth noting that he was reportedly on £11m here - no doubt and understandably paid very tax efficiently - and 6m euros post-tax at Real Madrid. Doubled his salary? To the equivalent of £22m?

In fact, that last sentence, Prentice is saying Ancelotti approached Real Madrid, isn't he??

Isn't the rat taking a pay cut to join Reak ?

Absolutely. In that season, City were smashed 8-1 by Boro. The misty eyed sentiment in the comments is exactly the sort of tosh our club peddles.

Yeah . To be honest when he left Everton I thought the way it played out was a little belittling to the club and in a way kind of summed up the period.

Don’t get me wrong United are a massive massive club and I didn’t dislike Moyes as such in the early years, we were in a poor state when he came , my issue is his period was made out to be an almost glory period end I never felt that way considering the overall picture.

Absolutely right.

Look, we have set the Media and Comms department some tough tasks in recent years - Sammy Lee as assistant manager?!?! - but they are dreadful at it.

Of course! You can’t have nasty Ancelotti getting away with mugging Everton FC off.

The reality is, and as the emotions settle, we were never, ever competing with Real Madrid, and it’s sad that we’re in this position. One day, I dream we’ll be back amongst Europeans greatest and this won’t happen anymore.

But let’s be realistic here, there is no way Everton wouldn’t have known if Ancelotti did this. Did Madrid reach out to his agent? Possibly... did he entertain it? If so, yes.

But give over trying to make it seem like Ancelotti has been architecting his departure for over a week.

This was a storm in a teacup, and happened because they got news that Pochettino was unavailable and they made the safe choice.

They're so blatant about it.

All totally correct. This bizarre smear campaign as the club holds its breath while Moshiri makes a decision is clumsy and unedifying. And as shown earlier in some cases disingenuous
