Actually to be honest that Prentice article is a disgrace and highlights the revisionism already at work

They veered away from a recruitment policy which had previously been based on attracting young players with potential and sell-on value, to allow Ancelotti to sign older established players like Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez.

Rooney, Gylfi, Bolasie, Tosun, Walcott - what's that, £120m? Old, no potential, no sell on value. That's absolutely never been the "policy".

The biggest myth of all is that we have had any sort of coherent strategy for recruiting players since Moyes left. Even under moyes it was mostly dictated by the fact we had no money.

Dave Prentice in the Mirror:

In the end money spoke for Carlo Ancelotti.

And that may well be the lesson Everton will take into their search for a new manager, as they look to replace the Italian barely 17 months into the job he had said was his “long term home”.

At the weekend, Ancelotti had given the board his commitment to the Goodison project, but barely 24 hours later found millions of reasons to change his mind, in the shape of a huge contract to return to Real Madrid.

He will reportedly double his salary at the English club by taking on the task of rebuilding the Spanish giants he approached late last week to announce his availability to them.

There's your mercenary shout. Worth noting that he was reportedly on £11m here - no doubt and understandably paid very tax efficiently - and 6m euros post-tax at Real Madrid. Doubled his salary? To the equivalent of £22m?

In fact, that last sentence, Prentice is saying Ancelotti approached Real Madrid, isn't he??

They've tempted away young and old potential world class players many times,so unfortunately they've tempted away a veteran manager, whose going for another last big pay day.Should we be surprised?

Burglars,ex wife dying,crap weather,double your money etc etc.Crap tactics since Xmas.FO.

And that's exactly it mate. Remove the club-orchestrated narrative and it is "manager goes back to former club where he'd been very successful". Hacks like Prentice and Maddock are working to a script.

It is lazy and phoney

He’s done crap like this before, during one of Lukakus famous on international duty comments, he went on and on about how big a club we are compared to likes of Chelsea but what he conveniently failed to mention was who was more likely to be successful in the future? Us or them? Nothing of that regard.

Fans passion and emotions get taken for granted and he’s complicit in that from a media perspective by pushing extensions of club retorts and PR.

Completely agree with this

The footage SSN are showing of him turning his back on the pitch at GP and visibly showing his frustration this evening speaks volumes. I’ve done all I can with these clowns is the implicit message Sky are telegraphing.

A thread dedicated to our utterly hopeless, woefully predictable PR and Comms department at Everton.

Today (1 June) Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid. The club have clearly been caught on the hop by this, it's panic stations, DEFCON 1, and there will be the usual effort to save face.

There's never anything particular innovative or agile about the media team, so expect them to dust down the old playbook this week. This will include:

  • Friendly journalists throwing digs at Ancelotti. He'll be portrayed as duplicitous, mercenary, and an enemy of the fans.
  • Lots (and lots) of these friendly faces will be on the TV, radio and national press in the next few days. Expect to hear a lot about our home record.
  • Obviously there will be a stadium update in the next fortnight.
  • Lots of names will be tested to see how they "land". I am deeply suspicious of the Graham Potter chat emerging from low-count sources.
  • "Fan" led content - those who have had a kickabout on the Goodison turf in an offseason pre-COVID in a literal and figurative sense - will be getting well stuck into Ancelotti.
Let's use this thread to keep a track on this creaky machine in motion. Already tonight - and no links as it's the ECHO - Dave Prentice, who has been at the teet of the club for many a moon, has published an article titled "Carlo Ancelotti has turned his back on Everton but Toffees cruelly denied chance to stop him" with the sub-heading "Carlo Ancelotti has left Everton for Real Madrid - turning his back on genuine affection from the club's supporters". Clumsy stuff, but who cares? It's right on message.

What you won't hear:

  • Considered journalist asks "When Zidane resigned, didn't Brands et al. give this some thought as a possible outcome?"
  • Friendly journalist ponders "Surely Everton have a list of managers they'd have gone down if Ancelotti had said no 18 months ago? The #2 must be the favourite, as that suggests a strategy"
  • Local journalist questions "how have Coleman, Gylfi, Davies, DCL, Keane, Holgate all outlasted yet another Everton manager? Maybe this spine (lol) of the squad is the problem?"
