Left Back Debacle

I liked the fella but he wasn't really any good after his injury (Debatable if he was any good before it either).

I am seeing this a lot though. Being rubbish now doesn't mean who should rue getting ridding of players who were not really good enough either in the past.
I thought that Baines was lucky to walk straight back into the team after Oviedo was given a run in his absence in 2013/14; and that was when Baines was one of the best around.

Sadly, the injury well and truly finished him.

The Eduardo of full-backs.

Amazing how many of our players get horror injuries. In the last 10 years alone Cahill multiple metatarsal fractures, Arteta ACL rupture, Yakubu ACL rupture, Jagielka ACL rupture, Anichebe broken leg and medial ligaments, Hibbert that virus that nearly killed him, Coleman double leg fracture, Barkley broken leg, Oviedo fracture and knee ligament, Funes Mori medial ligaments, Bolasie ACL ligament. That’s before you even get to the numerous long term muscle injuries the likes of McCarthy has had.

* raise hand for Kieran Tierney *

Sessegnon looks a touch too young to solves Everton's left back position. Looks great going forward but can he handle the bread and butter defending stuff?

I would personally change formation to negate the need for full backs.

CB CB CB

Pickford, Holgate, Williams, Keane, Gueye, McCarthy, Schneiderlin, Davies, Sigurdsson, Klaassen, Tosun

No wonder you died like 2 seconds into Return of the Jedi, mate.

Did Baines not come back in again because Oviedo was injured in the cup tie?

Or was he just being rotated that day?

But Bryan had indeed done very well in Baines’s absence.

Can’t see us getting a LB after the Garbutt announcement.
However, this thread made me think about it.... we brought in Cuco as very poor cover for Coleman because Koeman rated Kenny worse than Cuco. As if that’s not bad enough we intended to use the said Cuco as cover for Baines too even though he is a right back. This from a club finishing 7th in the EPL, with a billionaire owner and purportedly the best talent scout in the country!!
So, how could it have been worse, a true debacle... perhaps if we had brought Geri Deloufeu back from loan and made him play Left Back? Or tried to play Ashley Williams at LB... I am sure others can devise a worse debacle than this?

To be fair, didn't Koeman try to sign Jairo Riedewald, the left-footed CB (who can play left-back, similar to Distin I guess) who eventually went to Crystal Palace? If we got that one over the line, that would have been sufficient cover for LB and Funes Mori's injury.

Koeman was bleating at every presser about the need for a striker and left-back in August. The failure to get one in at the level we require, to me rests squarely on Walsh's and the board's shoulders.

Lol. Orrrr... Wesley Hoedt... Nvm, lets Southampton nab him.

I could be mistaken, but I think that Baines came back in once fit, and then Oviedo got hurt while getting a run out in the cup a few months later.

I do believe you are right, though it wouldn’t have been as long as a couple months later.....Oviedo Baby was injured in a 3rd Round clash, at Maidstone I think, on the first weekend of January.

I think Baines might have been re-instated in the Sunderland home game on Boxing Day.

Allardyce did say ‘one at a time’ when asked about Walcott which suggests there might be more business. You would hope it would be this.
