I've heard that a lot, even back in the late-90's or so when I got round to watch it. I appreciated the mood & tone, but it wasn't a grabber. 6/10 from memory. Mayhap I'll appreciate it more now.
Thing is with the Zodiac, its a true story and the film is representing an angle on that from the writters perspective, the story itself is really interesting although much more is known about the case now then when the book was wrote, also Mark Ruffalo and John Carroll Lynch both fine actors IMO

Amazing film. There are alternate endings, but the one they went with was incredible. Disturbing and gut wrenching. The distributor hated it, they wanted Fincher to change the ending and go with one of the others that were a little less powerful. Im glad he stood his ground.
Be interested to see those endings, one thing that did strike me is it remined me of some kind of ISIS deal with a fella in a red robe kneeling down, obviously the film pre-dates all that crap but it added something sinister to the end

Yeah, I get that, that's why I got it on DVD. But we both really struggled through it. I've enjoyed similar films like The Insider (not serial-killing but similar in pacing & tone), plus Fincher's 90's work was superlative.
Also something about Jake Gyllenhaal I'm not keen on: Donnie Darko was great but Enemy & now Zodiac has really put me off him. Just plain boring & pretentious vibes. We've got Nightcrawler on bluray which we'll try at some point, so it's last-chance saloon for him.

The framing on the shot in the car is amazing of Kevin Spacey, both his eyes and mouth lined up perfect through the metalwork, also the final location, the pylons play no roll but add something to what would otherwise be a barren landscape
maybe interesting sub-discussion: which are your top 3 shocking memorable plot-twist endings ever?
obvs with spoilers...
for me:
1. oldboy (korean one, 2003)
holy moly...can't even describe it in words, just saying what the twist was doesn't do it justice. saying that, my favourite bit is the very final scene with that twisted agonised cry-smile from Oh Dae-Su as he embraces her...he deffo remembers!
2. REC2
frakkin 'ell, she's the baddy! and most epic with it too
3. Planet of the Apes (1968)
maybe the most famous plot twist of all, amazingly i didn't know about it when first watching this sometime in the 90's...jaw dropped

I've never cried...not since childhood. But King Arthur regaining strength in Excalibur while his brother calls to arms gave me a little moisture in the eyes & a lump in my throat. didn't know i had it in me.
Dead Mans Shoes. have it, not seen it yet
One Flew over the Cuckoo`s Nest. 9/10
The Road. have it, not seen it yet
Blade Runner. 9/10 (Final Cut version)
signs are good then that those two i haven't seen are bound to be decent!

The Road isn't a patch on the book, as they bottled it when they made the film, leaving out a great deal of the graphic stuff, plus Vigo Mortenson is miscast in the lead, but it's still not a bad film.
Dead Men's shoes is ultra low budget, but still remains Paddie Considines best film imo.
He was good in Killing Them Softly (2012) and on the strength of that I'll be watching The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. It's Pitt's first film with the Andrew Dominick, the director of Killing Them Softly, so I'm hoping it's a good one.

Love Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal is definitely closer to his awkward, off-kilter Donnie Darko persona in it but it's a much darker and manipulative character.
Ape...lizard...and wolf go crazy wild in an american state.
I knew going in it was going to be god awful...but even I was pleasantly suprised it was far far worse.
