Ready Player One

Very good movie with so many retro references you never get bored. Classic Spielberg too with a good plot.

The 2nd key level is just film buff heaven

The Trailer makes it look woeful imo. Gives off the impression that it completely relies on retro references and hideously overdone CGI. If someone said make a trailer that promotes everything wrong with Hollywood then id say Ready Player One's trailer nailed it.

It's got decent reviews though so must be doing something right but dear god it looks lame from the trailer.

Agreed the trailer isnt the best but it's set in an computer animated universe so there is a lot of CGI but it doesn't deflect from the story or plot

You couldn't be more wrong. I've just seen it and it is an excellent film. Really good fun, and it actually has a story that the effects back up, rather than SFX propping up a rubbish plot.

I'm a big Back to the Future fan, and appreciated the references, but I'm not a comic book or video game nerd, so you don't need to be to enjoy the movie. It's strong enough and fun enough on its own without having to rely on the pop culture references.

I'm really tired of reboots, remakes and retreads, and Ready Player One isn't like that. It is much more original, even though it is very derivative of a lot of pop culture. The story is actually very human, and while it celebrates technology, it is very aware of its limitations. I think the CGI is amongst the best I've ever seen, given the scale of the film. It has a unique style where it is supposed to look like a simulation rather than reality, which really helps.

Easily the best film I've seen this year, very much of its time and a fresh breakaway from the Marvel and DC stuff that gets churned out all the time.

Ready Player One - Rating: 9/10

Well if this is your grip with what I wrote then you're complaining about a contradiction that wasnt there.

I didn't say Justice League was a wild departure from every comic film ever made. I said there has enough differences to the endless repetitive stream of Marvel film and there was. Marvel films are almost identical and follow the same tired uniform patterns every film. Take Black Panther, it was your typical Marvel film with a diffrent setting and diverse cast but it was the same film we've seen so many times from Marvel. Nothing new, same old.

You say one is done brilliantly and the other terrible? Well here's my view, one has been going for about a decade now while the other is still basically in its cinematic infancy. Marvel faced zero competition, DC now has to face Marvel at its peak. Maybe some of us enjoy the diffrances to the formulaic marvel films and don't want to sit through what would effectively be yet more marvel films but with the DC logo on. I don't want to sit through ten diffrent origin films just to get to the team up. The Justice League had more then enough explanation for everyone's backstory and history, I'd actually be a bit concerned for any adult who wasn't able to follow it all. You seem annoyed that they didn't copy the exact formula of Marvel well I for one am delighted.

Look at your complaint about the bad guys at the old Bailey, I'm so glad they weren't some random rogue gang thrown together for a latter film and were just a one off. Not everything has to be "in universe", this is what I meant by differences to marvel films, doing that scene like they did was a good thing for me. Marvel would of made some nothing villain character who hasn't been seen in the comics since 1992 get beat just as easily and pointlessly and 99% of the audience wouldn't of known who he/she was nor would they of cared. Not everything has to tie-in or be followed up in later films. It was ok at first but this type of stuff has been done to death at this stage and imo is one of the reasons marvel filns have become such a bore. There's absolutely nothing orignal to them.

You make it sound like marvel earned their position rather then because they had the might of the mouse driving them. People keep trying to pretend that DC films are doing a terrible job and making nothing but In reailty the first five DC films have earned more then the first five marvel films. I'd say they're doing as a if not better job then marvel did in the early days.

Oh BTW I'm so glad you didn't bring up CGI because......;)View attachment 45189

Hi GSL x

You say Justice League is 'different' from any other repetitive comic film. How? It's just as repetitive and done even worse. Justice League made Worldwide what Black Panther made in the U.S alone. One B grade Marvel character just absolutely murdered the A team of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman at the Box Office. It was brutal. The public spoke. 'Same old Marvel' just beat the pants outta apparently the highly original and groundbreaking Justice League.

I don't understand why people like you think there is some kind of divide between the two and root for one and trash the other. Can't they both exist? They have copied each other and traded blows for long before we were alive. Superman and Batman films were well established before any Marvel films came along. They re-booted Batman in 2005 and Superman in 2006, before Marvel made Iron Man and the Hulk in 2008. How is that for a run-up on Marvel?

You just can't deny that Marvel make fresh and interesting fare and DC are just stuck churning out hot garbage. Okay explain to me why Batman leaves a man who has just robbed someones apartment on the rooftop with the stuff he just stole. He doesn't string the guy up with a note for Commissioner Gordon? WT actual F? Have they ever even read a Batman story?? That's Batman 101 in the first scene and one of a host of reasons the DC films suck. They should be great, but they suck.
