If I want to knee jerk I will knee jerk, I will also praise when we do good things.

Ive earned the right after 30 years of buying season tickets, 2 a year, Cup Finals, travel etc etc

another confusing night as an everton supporter yes we hav beaten che and manu gr8 results and still hav braggin rights over their fans but they r gone and we cant keep using them as an excuse if we get beat.....

its the manner in which we went out and pisses me off im goin to side with DM on this one as i thought by his body language his instructions were not been followed

we hav a right to bitch bout individual/ team perfomances its called passion we cant look to compete at the right end of the prem or in europe every yr but then get out the book of excuses when we get beat

fail to prepare ....prepare to fail

Let the knee jerkers jerk!Thats what forums are for .Personally I think Sporting played out of thier skins and caught us by suprise ,we should heve done better but didn´t .But If you asked me would I rather beat Man C,Chelsea,Manure or Sporting I know what I´d of picked ,one s*ite preformance does not make us a s*ite team. Bring on Spurs !

Missed a lot of the action from last night it seems, as I caught a bad case of stomach flu. That withheld me from browsing and posting on GOT.

Was truely shocked by Everton's lacklustre performance in Lisbon yesterday. An eye-opener probably for me. Proved that we're not as good as I believed we were, but we certainly aren't as bad as some try making us out to be.

Consistency is the key word. After our demolishing of Man Utd, we should've come away with something from the Lisbon game. Apart from Howard it was a complete no show from the men in Blue though and it's not the first time that happened this season. Have to find a way to cut these performances (lack in concentration and effort) out and so really become a force to be reckoned with. Both the squad and Moyes are to blame for this I feel, but no use calling for anyone's head. Just use this debacle to come away with stronger than before.

Forget comparing the hurly-burly of the Premier League with Europe. You're comparing apples and pears. We are primitives in Europe - a complete pushover for any team wanting to match our workrate and then trump it with a passing game. There is absolutely no excuses for the tripe served up last night and other occasions in Europe. We have the players to do way better than this. We just dont have the coach who can set them out to do a job in these circumstances, that's the top and bottom of it. Moyes isn't tactically aware enough before games in his preparation or flexible enough in his thinking during them to allow Everton to make an impact on European opposition.

For the kneejerkers forgive me for paraphrasing Rudyard Kipling's If

"If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same
....
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!"

We got beaten by the better team on the night. Sporting, who haven't lost to an English team at home in any European competition (according to the TV punditry) came at us like a team whose entire season hinged on the outcome of this game and we wilted under that pressure.

That Rodwell hospital ball and resulting penalty gave them to confidence to go at us without having to leave themselves open. A 2-0 win at the Auld Lady and they may have been more cavalier and we could have profitted. But that's all by the by now.

It hurts that our Euro dreams ended on a whimper rather than a bang, that the team froze in the headlights like some of us had sadly predicted after the great promise of our performances in the last month but there it is.

Too many off days on our side, too many good performances on theirs. Our lack of adventure shouldn't be put down solely to negative tactics or playing for a draw. There was a negative mindset amongst the players, a fear we haven't seen for a while and a Sporting team playing their best game of the season caused it and then capitalised.

We must all move on and most importantly these players (who do care in my opinion and will be hurting too) must, must LEARN from it. Where's the final next year so we can start working on "Ce sera sera" MkIII?

Bring on Spurs. COYB

Agree European footy is a totally different ballgame compared to the EPL. However, we're only a pushover in Europe, because we accept being a pushover. And yes, Moyes is also to blame for that. However, the team he put out yesterday was the same team (bar the CB pairing) that played Man Utd off the park on Saturday. We played a passing game against the Champions of England (who for sure are a far better team then Sporting Lisbon) and got our rewards for that. Yesterday was a complete no show (no selfbelief, no passion, no commitment and no ideas) by our boys though, something that can't be solely blamed on Moyes. As I said, it was an eye opener for me personally, but one I hope and think our boys will take a lesson from.

Against United and Chelsea and Liverpool and Arsenal we've struggled to get a result until lately under Moyes. He is not a quick learner. It's taken him years to get the better in a one off game against those sides he's very familiar with, and he's been blessed in that time with some very good players culminating in this crop - who cant help but put in a good passing performance on occasion. At this rate it'll take another half dozen season's in Europe before Moyes is getting his head around how to play two-legged ties and feeling confident enough to send his team out to do a professional job. Read this post match comment by the manager:

"I said the players needed to score a goal so that was always the plan but in all truth the goal lost late on at Goodison was the thing that changed the tie a bit,"

We were a goal to the good against a team in desperate straits. Talk about negative thinking. And you cant convey that attitude to a team either pre or post match. That's just a recipe for further embarrassment down the line. For me, Moyes has learned practically nothing in the handful of seasons he's taken us into Europe. It's little wonder many doubt the importance of actually qqualifying for it next season.

Why is that quote negative thinking Davek? It's just the truth 2-0 and they have to throw everything at us or give up the tie. 2-1 and they have gained confidence and can be more patient in their approach. Seems simple to me.

As for the bit about some of us not caring about getting into the Goblet, don't try and twist that to your new agenda mate. If you've read the threads on it (like the one I started months ago) it is based on the financial benefits of the Goblet against it's possible impact on a concerted top 4 push next season. Not in the slightest about us not caring because we're [Poor language removed] at Euro footy. If we're Gobletting again next season I'll still want us to give it our all.

Sorry davek, but maybe I'm just a too positive thinking kind of guy to go with your logic. Because we did so or so in the past, we'll do that again in the future, seems to be your approach. Well, maybe you're right (everyone's entitled to his own views and opinions), but I prefer to live from chance to chance so to speak. When we'll get into Europe next time. Hopefully as early as next season, it will be an all new episode in the Moyes' era at our club. I'm not afraid of the future, but look towards it as a new challenge.

2-1 is a goal in front with them having to force the play - as they did. We never looked like exploiting their desire to commit to attack. That looks like the way they were sent out to deal with Sporting: dont give them an early cheap goal...which then became the philosophy for the rest of the half. Have you ever seen a team defend so deeply?

And another thing on the first leg: we were 2-0 up and we're going for number 3. Why? Very naive. We had them in handcuffs in the tie at that stage. Pushing so high up the pitch at that stage was an unnecessary dangerous game to play at that point in the tie. Again, that underlines Moyes lack of smarts in Europe.

I hope we do qualify again. All I'm saying is that it's a trend in the manager's career that he isn't too quick on the uptake and it'll take many more seasons in Europe for him to get his head around it.

someone made a comment about fulham last night.

Roy Hodgson cut his teeth in the international arena, and has managed Viking FK, Malmö FF, Internazionale, Blackburn Rovers, Grasshoppers, F.C. Copenhagen and Udinese.
So he is in effect the manager with the most experience of Europe, as well as that he has managed the Swiss national team, this guy is no mug, so lets not put Fulham down as a team that are gonna get whacked off the park in europe, tbh it would be more of a shock if they did.
He also seems the sort of person who would help another manager of a prem team in Europe.

Never heard a bad word said about Hodgson. Good manager.
