But how do the kit maker/sponsors offers rate alongside public sales of the kit? As someone said earlier, are kids really into Umbro gear compared to say, Adidas? Probably not. Does the club consider the potential future sales or just take the most money offered?
We don't make a lot of money on merchandise as far as I know. We don't have that sort of fanbase really, so my guess would be that taking the upfront cash is a more attractive proposition than thinking we might flog slightly more stuff to kids and scallies if we put a more desirable logo on it.

I think it depends how big you are within the brand.

So with LeCoq we were their main team so got all the exclusive designs. With Umbro/Nike we are/were just one of many teams so get generic ones.

Maybe. A footy kit doesn’t have to be unique to be decent. I loved our 1983-85 Le Coq Sportif kit, even though Aston Villa had the same design.

Quite liked the Lecoq sportif ones and the Nike ones we had for a while. Basically anyone but Umbro would do for me.

Why not Umbro? Umbro have made some of the best kits we’ve had - pretty much everything in the 70’s, 1986-89, etc. To be honest, I’m not bothered about the financial side of the kit deal. We’ll probably blow the money on crap players anyway.

Maybe not a rational answer but I associate them with failure

Because recently they just seem to be churning out template kits with zero thought behind it. Some of them have been truly awful too. We keep getting stupid gimmicks on them like the criss cross sleeves on this one or the neon trim on one of the Koeman ones, the dark blue under arms on last season’s that looked like a training top. Meanwhile some other teams are getting really classic looking kits.

I agree that last season’s was rubbish. I really like the current one. 2016-17 was decent too.

I just don’t think our kit ever looks regal. Liverpool’s kit last year was brilliant (if you can get past the fact it’s them), even theirs this year is fantastic. Chelsea have had a couple of great ones recently too. Arsenal’s always look classy. For some reason us, and United, keep churning out bizarre clunky looking kits.

Who ever makes the kits, and personally I’d love to see Adidas do them, I just want something simple and classic. Royal Blue with a white collar and cuffs. Even That special goodison commemorative kit Umbro did last season, give me that.

I agree that the last couple of Liverpool kits have looked good. Arsenal’s Puma kits have been pretty rubbish, as have the last couple of Nike Chelsea kits. Chelsea 2015/16 was smart, but it was just a “template” kit.

Who cares. The "new" Everton just signed an extension to the worst commercial deal (Kitbag) in the history of commerce dating back to 4000BC.

If we sell 5,000 or 5,000,000,000 shirts we get the same money. Annual lump sum that Man United take in in a fortnight.
