John Stones transfer saga

True LL, Baines was quite the gentleman where I think if Everton wanted the dollar he would have left but showed respect and then got a new deal which ties him to us until his end of days as a footballer I should imagine
He'd have been daft if he wasn't tempted tbh - no relocation, more chance of silverware and working for a manager he knew well and quite possibly his last chance of a big momey move.

John is in a different situation though, if he maintains his form he's equally likely to get offers next summer including from Mourinho and at that point he's more likely to be in the first team rather than a bench option.

I think it means that we don't need to sell to meet any outstanding financial obligation. As @the esk explained earlier the only question in this regard is how much debt the club are prepared to carry through the next financial year.

As there is no capital injection though, I think we may need to sell if we want to improve the squad with any sort of quality. So it comes down to whether or not you believe the squad needs strengthening. Maybe the board don't, but personally I do.

So how would that explain us buying Deulofeu and Cleverley before any sales as well as clearly being in negotiations with Ogbanna before his West Ham move?

Some additional quotes in the Mail

Martinez, who has ruled out complaining to the Premier League over Chelsea's conduct, said: 'You know that is illegal. The rules do not allow you to comment in that open manner on players who are registered at other clubs. It is disappointing.
'We have a fantastic relationship between the two clubs and in the past we made our biggest investment in Chelsea.
'We all know there are rules and regulations and it is something we don't want to see when other clubs speak about your players. It is wrong and it shouldn't happen.'

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has suggested his club will not make any more signings this summer, but the feeling remains they will return with another offer for Stones. Martinez says he has no intention wasting time trying to second-guess what Chelsea will do but re-affirmed Everton's position.

'John Stones is not for sale, we have said that many times,' Martinez stressed. When asked if Everton would look to review Stones' contract, Martinez said: 'At the moment the focus is to bring in three players.'

Or we can do the treble and he stays with us.

We can all dream once in a while ;)
