John Stones transfer saga

I would say that would be spot on LL. Coach to Martinez, saying to someone publicly "30m should do it" or saying to someone publicly "well 12 years ago Rio was worth 30m" and he could give a cheeky wink at the fella and drive off as if to say prices have gone up so Stones would cost a hell of a lot more.

Ferdinand already had several years PL experience behind him though so Utd had to push the boat out to get him. Mourinho is obviously trying to get Stones at a relatively cheaper price as he doesn't have the same level of experience at this stage of his career. I'd guess that Chelsea are not prepared to go above £30m so hopefully the board would turn that down and he will stay. I'm not 100% convinced they would though.

Perhaps at the start of the window Chelsea enquired about his availability and we replied that he's not for sale this window short of a fee equivalent to a modern day Rio Ferdinand.

That would have put Chelsea with a choice of a) pay silly money now b) wait until next summer when other teams with more finances also interested c) abandon their usual private transfer policy and the clubs good relations and try to tap him up publicly and hope he forces a move.

I know what you mean EW but I think for me personally I see the positive in a few ways

1. He stays and we've shown we have a set of balls when required. Keeping players shouldn't be a big deal but in the money grabbing game of football we now endure it's a moral victory
2. We sell him but for an insane amount of money such as 40+ million
3. We sell him for a stupid amount like 30m,Martinez isn't happy and walks and we realise we've all had enough of this crap we've been served up from the board for years and out them.

I can live with either 3 of those situations as I'm a realist ( option 2 ), I'm an optimist ( option 1 ) and I'm a dreamer ( option 3 ) ;)

Looks like they went for option C then.

Yep the public nature of the way they've talked about him actually makes me believe Everton politely told them to f off and then Chelsea decided to make it public. Our board let's be honest are a sham in most things they do but I firmly believe thats how this started. Mourinho wants to show he's Billy big B ( you know what I mean ) and Everton HOPEFULLY will show that we won't be bullied by a no mark club ( in my own personal opinion can't hold a candle to our club ) and Stones, if he's as grounded as folk say he is realises in about 3-4 years time can be playing the ultimate tikki takka togger with Barca or helping Madrid as Ramos has been sent off again.

Can't really see a positive in us selling Stones at all Frank. But it's becoming clear that if the squad is to be significantly strengthened we may have to.

I don't think we will sell so unfortunately I won't get the chance to run down Goodison Road with my pitchfork for option 3. I'm gonna take a leap of faith EW and say option 1 will be the outcome.

If it does come to fruition we have to sell Stones to buy 3 players well then there's trouble ahead and I may be able to dust off the pitch fork after all ;)

I'd be inclined to relate the situation to the recent transfer of Luiz rather than any deal that happened over ten years ago.

We haven’t been in that situation,” said Martínez. “The whole John Stones situation has come through the media because a club made a bid and made it public. We have never been in a situation of commenting. We have a very talented young player who really has the potential to be the best centre-half England has produced, so you are going to get that attraction. That is natural, healthy and very, very positive. But a player can make a decision when the clubs say he can make a decision. There is nothing to make a decision on. There is no negotiation. There is no relationship between the clubs in terms of trying to find a deal.”

He added: “The modern game has gone in such a way that sometimes there are things you cannot control. But what you can control is your own finances and we are not a football club that has to sell to balance the books. If you think we need to sell John Stones to balance the books, that is not the case. As a club we are brave enough to give young players a big role and we know we will have to go through situations where these players might get interest from elsewhere. But as long as we can control our finances that is not a problem.”

The only times I can recall mourinho being this public for a league transfer were for Gerrard and Rooney. The media pressure certainly worked with Gerrard in that he handed in the transfer request and came close to with Rooney although in the latter case United made it clear he wasn't for sale.

You'd think if we were willing to sell for 30m then a deal would have been done by now without the drama.
