John Stones transfer saga

Bobby has some steel to him under the nice words.

Hopefully Stones sees James and Kevin signing and stays for now.

My concern is that Chelsea (or maybe City or United) really struggle in the opening games and then start lobbing stupid money at us. Even if they offered £50m, I'd want Stones to stay

Some escalation in the war of words

Roberto Martínez has accused John Terry of involvement in a Chelsea campaign to tap up John Stones and insisted Everton are under no financial pressure to sell a player with “the potential to be the best centre-half England has produced”.

Everton have rejected bids of £20m and £26m for their 21-year-old defender from the Premier League champions this summer and informed Chelsea in writing that Stones is not for sale. That has not prevented José Mourinho, Gary Cahill and Terry from publicly discussing Chelsea’s pursuit of the England international, in breach of Premier League guidelines, and their captain returned to the subject on Wednesday when he said: “One day I won’t be in the team but Chelsea are looking to the likes of John Stones for the future, so the club will continue to grow and do well.”

Martínez claimed that Terry was guilty of an illegal approach to the Barnsley-born defender, although Everton have not added substance to their manager’s view by reporting Chelsea to the Premier League. “That is wrong; that is illegal,” said the Evertonmanager on Terry’s comment. “The rules don’t allow you to comment on players who are registered at other clubs in that open manner. That is disappointing.”

The Everton manager reiterated that Stones was not for sale but with the caveat: “I am not stupid enough to say I know what will happen.” He also evaded several questions on whether Stones has expressed an interest in joining Chelsea.

“We haven’t been in that situation,” said Martínez. “The whole John Stones situation has come through the media because a club made a bid and made it public. We have never been in a situation of commenting. We have a very talented young player who really has the potential to be the best centre-half England has produced, so you are going to get that attraction. That is natural, healthy and very, very positive. But a player can make a decision when the clubs say he can make a decision. There is nothing to make a decision on. There is no negotiation. There is no relationship between the clubs in terms of trying to find a deal.”

He added: “The modern game has gone in such a way that sometimes there are things you cannot control. But what you can control is your own finances and we are not a football club that has to sell to balance the books. If you think we need to sell John Stones to balance the books, that is not the case. As a club we are brave enough to give young players a big role and we know we will have to go through situations where these players might get interest from elsewhere. But as long as we can control our finances that is not a problem.”

Everton have spent only £4.2m on one transfer fee this summer, for Gerard Deulofeu, with Tom Cleverley arriving on a free. Martínez wants to sign a central defender, striker and No10 before 1 September. He insists those targets are not dependent on Stones leaving and may arrive late in the window, with clubs’ involvement in European qualifiers one possible factor in delaying business.

Excellent, he's staying then!

That is not promising.
Personally am with @The Equaliser and find it reassuring - similar language was used in the Baines saga when he said that it was only Baines decision when the clubs made it Leighton's by accepting a bid - until then he was under contract. Also he clearly stated the clubs were not negotiating and Hunter confirms we sent a letter stating not for sale.

Also why escalate a war of words with Mourinho if you didn't feel that you were likely to keep the player?

I get that. But the player is affected, as admitted by Martinez. Head turned. IF the player has privately told the club he'd like the move, questions which Bobbie wouldnt answer and dodged... it doesnt bode well.

I'm 100% convinced that he will be sold if the club's valuation is met. I'm also 100% convinced that he won't be sold if it isn't. This is basically up to whether or not Mourinho and Chelsea are prepared to stump up the required amount of cash, which I'd estimate as being £35m tops.

So I suppose the answer to your question is 50%.

Players come and go, but what worries me most is that the club would value Stones at £35M

That is not promising.

I would say it's completely the opposite. I ain't Bobbys number 1 fan by any stretch but that's him calling them out and publicly saying the way they've spoken publicly is illegal. That raises the stakes. We need to dig our heels in, Stones needs to understand he's at a fantastic club and we basically need to get our own business done and get some points on the board.

Bellends like Terry, Cahill seem to get a free ride from the press who lap there crap up and the FA do sod all about it. I'm happy our manager is calling them out for it.

Martinez is speaking to Stones there every bit as much as he's speaking to us.

He's hit just the right tone. He's the boss, but ultimately if Stones wants to leave, eventually he will. He'd be an idiot not to nod toward that.

It'll come down to Stones himself I reckon. And his head is turned already supposedly

Love how you dont highlight the bit where it says there is no negotiation and no deal on the table.
Or the bit where a player doesnt have a decision to make.

If the board sell Stones after this I think they would risk losing the manager.

I would hope so Jinks and I don't mean that in a bad way ( Martinez resigning ). I would like to think he has integrity and I would like to think that he would believe he should be backed regardless of a sale of a player who he loves. If he was sold without his consent I would expect him to walk and then the small matter of outing the board would begin imo.

I understand what you are saying but my reading of the club's finances is that the club does not have to sell to buy unless the Board has decided to significantly reduce/ completely eradicate the Vibrac loan in financial year 2015/16.

As I said in an earlier post the transfer budget will be determined by the Board's view of what the net debt position ahould look like.

Ironically the club is in a better position to borrow than it has for many a year. However the Board may be focusing on other priorities for future debt such as stadium plans.

I will go back to my oft stated comment that all this would be resolved with an injection of capital either from existing shareholders, new shareholders or a complete sale of the club.
They might not need to sell to buy, but if they do it and choose to address the debt that would be a choice to benefit themselves (as future sellers) at the expense of building a team.

As for stadium plans - I refuse to believe that lot can deliver (and you can bet there wont be too many partners queuing up to sign a contract with them).
