John Stones transfer saga

That's the thing. It's of absolutely no benefit to us to sell him. We sell for £30m this window and a few people need lynching. Personally think he'll stay and the £30m is pure garbage, plucked out the air. Rio went for that over a decade ago ffs.
Hes on a long contract, just say no.
If the board say yes then if I was Bobby Id walk

Right. We have to replace Stones (with an inferior player) and after we do that, and after Barnsley's cut and wages/fees of extra players which you know they'll take out of this cash, we'll have maybe 10m. 10m! For selling the best defensive prospect England has produced in a decade we will get 10m.

We need two defenders - after their cut it'll be more like a loan for our #10. And left with Kone!

I think everyone needs to rewatch the press conference.

You are all a bit fragile tbh.

As far as I can see nothing has changed.

If I was Stones, who is such a modest, mild mannered lad; I would be upset to see my name in the paper day in, day out.

I would be sooo pissed at the attention and lies being printed about me "wanting" to leave.

It's the first time I've felt it but everything about Martinez at the press conference suggested that Stones is gone and there's nothing he can do to stop it...

What makes you think Martinez is on board with this Davek? My reading of the situation is that Martinez is trying to build a young group of players that he can bring through. I think he's happy to offload, but prefers to offload older players (ah la, Fellaini, Heitinga, Jelavic, Anichebe). If he has been along with this his has played a risky game.

What we really run the risk of here is setting a precedent. We let Rooney go too cheaply. After that the negotiations for other players were stronger and we got over the odds. But if we let Stones go for 30 million it marks a dangerous precedent.
He's used the phrase "no intention" to sell Stones throughout. That's very specific. It means if circumstances change (IE the price rockets upward) a deal can be done.

It's inconceivable to me that at the back end of last season the manager hasn't been told how much he'd get to spend this summer and what he'd have to do to get it. A big spend like last summer was always going to be an outside bet, so Martinez must have known any rebuilding would have to be done also with sales (not necessarily Stones, but his was the name the market threw up because of lack of genuine interest for others...notably Mirallas). If that's the case then he'd have had a pretty small war chest to play with and would more than likely wait until the player sale to determine what resources went where. It makes perfect sense in those circumstances. The hold up though hadn't been reckoned with, and now we have a panic on our hands.

That manager did not look like a happy camper in today's press conference. I reckon a schism has materialised between people generally on the same page at the beginning of the window but who are now dancing to different tunes as we hurtle toward the season's KO.

"Do I look like a proper plum"

I've always been resigned to the fact that we don't need to sell him but will do if the club's valuation is met, but the grim reality is beginning to bite that there will be no proper squad strengthening unless he goes. This adds a whole new dimension to the possibility of his sale and could tip the balance in favour of it as the closing of the window approaches.

Either way it is a sad indictment of the club that again we start the season seriously under strength up front and at the back, compounded by the inevitable injury crisis. Wouldn't be surprised if negotiations between chairmen are already taking place behind the scenes which might explain why Mourinho has buttoned his lip about it in recent days.

Clearly John is one of the outstanding young talents that we have in the squad and you are going to get that sort of interest from the outside. John is an Everton player and there is nothing else to comment on that.”

When asked about the prospect of Chelsea coming back with an improved offer, Martínez said: “You shouldn’t worry about situations you cannot affect or control.

“I said from the beginning – when you are not a club that is trying actively to sell players, the focus is just to try to be as good as we can at the weekend and see how ready we are individually and as a team. Everything else is stuff that does not bother me now at all.”

So he says the situation may have "affected" John, but that it's a good learning experience, then he goes on to say the above. I haven't seen the actual presser, nor am I a body-language expert like some on here apparently are. But taking his words at face value, I see nothing worrying there.

It is infuriating that now that Mourinho has made this a story, the press have latched onto it even though Chelsea have said they won't improve their bid and we have said he's not for sale.

Well yes I see a developing chasm for sure. That's what worries me really. I know people don't like the idea of Moyes and Kenwright having a tumultuous relationship and think they were thick as thieves but I really think there were significant disagreement and argument there particularly over the summer. I imagine at least part of that was caused by Kenwright being dishonest to Moyes about the amount of money available.

I suspect that this is what's happening with Martinez. While you have read into it that this means Martinez has had guarantees about the speed and amount generated by Stones, by own reading of it is that Kenwright probably gave Martinez some wooly guarantees that have yet to materialise. I personally think Martinez was looking to hold firm over Stones unless we got a seismic offer which we couldn't turn down (say in excess of 40).

Obviously someone is giving Chelsea some encouragement behind the scenes. Chelsea are adopting an approach whereby they try to pressure us to force the sale through. It is suicide for us though. We are two days before the start of the season, we have two senior centre halves and we are discussing selling one of them for around his market value (which would be in normal circumstances around 30 million).
