It’s a goofy example but I recall last year she went and spoke to the Howard University basketball players after they lost by 30 and were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and it was the most cringy thing I can recall seeing in sports. Felt like she was addressing them as if they were 5 year olds, and not adults. Maybe the intent was good but the way she delivered it made it feel like a photo op. As a former athlete I’d have been wildly annoyed with someone telling me how great we were right after a 30 point season ending loss. It’s a dumb example, but things like that make her feel out of touch which ultimately does matter.
It's a great example. Calvin Coolidge rated a zero for charisma, but FDR changed the game. The modern minimum baseline is 'relatable' (Truman, Carter, W) unless one can ride coattails in good economic times the way Bush 41 did, and he might have had a bad time if Gary Hart could keep it zipped. Harris scores very poorly there.
The big difference between Trump and most House members is profile. Think back to 2015-16. The major news outlets might have hated his guts, but they also had an addiction to covering him because he generated clicks. Still do.
Someone like MTG would suffer in a general from things like introducing legislation to reduce the salaries of Merrick Garland, Christopher Wray and other federal officials to $1. Trump seems to defy normal conventions of political gravity in a way that does not extend to acolytes, for whatever reason. If anyone could explain exactly how Trump and Reagan did this, the Republicans probably would never lose another presidential election.
