Fair enough, but to me the fact he ended up at a desperate Villa (* see point below for clarification :)) says it all really. You'd have thought someone else higher up would have been interested even if it was just for a sell on in the next couple of years if he only ends up being a fringe player.

(Yes, I know they are only a point below us. Villa will be in the relegation fight, we won't. We CAN play much better than we are doing right now and will at some point (last year showed that), but I don't think Villa can)
I think he went there because he has friends there and he would be guaranteed to play.

He went on loan (to promotion/relegation team) where he starred for first team football and has now left his boyhood club for the same reason. It's not hard to understand. There are actually some players that want to play and not sit on the bench or constantly get loaned where no clubs give a damn and see their careers go to hell. I know with players like Sinclair and Rodwell that's hard to believe but Rom came to us for the same reason.

I think Villa will finish above us. Vault me.

If their out of contract and there's no fee involved in six months how can it be cheaper to pay a fee for them now?

They will be a lot cheaper than their market value right now, so a discount will apply. There is no such thing as discounts in the Summer, they're either free agents and therefore no fee is involved, or they cost the same amount as they did in January.

Valencia have a 12m buyback clause in Gil's contract. RM will have said eff that. That's the long and the short of it.
That's what I think happened which if the case it's a stupid decision as either not paying the release clause or accepting it would have been better.

It depends how much the selling club want rid and even then the player will take a lot of persuasion and want very high wages given they could move anywhere in 6 months time. I doubt there's a great saving all in, there's a reason most clubs don't do business in this window and they all cite there's no value in the market, not just Everton.

Exactly. You need to buy players whenever they come available. Penny pinching in this way just guarantees that you might miss out.

Every team has to placate it's supporters. Most business does get done in the summer but January shouldn't be dismissed just because it's the January window.
