Sounds like he's not wanting to paint himself into a corner on getting someone in. That's sesnsible. If none of the irons in the fire he has come to anything he's avoiding leaving himself a hostage to criticism that he promised faces in and never delivered.

Reading between the lines, it looks like he acknowledges that Osman and Pienaar are not going to make it back this season and he's looking to bring in a replacement if the finances are doable (which they should be if that clown Kenwright doesn't bank all the Eto'o savings).
