I won't doubt that there are individual members or units in the IDF that either specifically target children, or as a minimum tolerate it.

Still, my take on it is that the wider IDF do not specifically target children, yet their 'tolerance' towards collateral damage facilitates more and more children dying.

This is probably the closest to my take.

I think Hamas's tactic of using children as human shields either as a way to stop Israel's retaliation - or to garner sympathy with the more 'compassionate' west to force a ceasefire isn't working.

Great question, personally I think they'd rather peace - the declaration from 1948 states as much, I think the main obstacle now is the indoctrination and radicalisation of martyrdom in Palestinian children.

I would have thought "maiming and murdering thousands of children is wrong" would be a slam dunk ethical statement, but it's almost 2025 and apparently I've not considered the moral nuances of bombing kids to smithereens

Sadly, I disagree - there’s been plenty of opportunities for the IDF to deal with soldiers who target civilians, plenty to deal with those who target kids. Doing so would enforce military discipline and be a powerful argument against those who argue the IDF either doesn’t care or does it deliberately. It would also have massively helped with the ICJ case, which to a great extent relies on the absence of effective domestic law enforcement of breaches of human rights law to justify an international response.

They’ve taken none of those opportunities. For the past twenty years, children have been executed by Israeli personnel, with Israeli personnel reporting the crime and nothing is done:

I can't see the intended purpose for the IDF that's all, I can fully understand reporting it as such - but from a tactical standpoint from Israel, it's counterproductive.
